“It makes me uncomfortable to talk about meanings and things. It's better not to know so much about what things mean. Because the meaning, it's a very personal thing, and the meaning for me is different than the meaning for somebody else.”
― David Lynch
First things first, this past year has been a LOT, one I’ve never really had the chance to sit down and process. Our last attempt was interrupted by, well, life. I got my degree, started working in the industry, made some shorts, spent some time in the world of US reality TV (yikes), lost someone very close to me, became an uncle, and began work on a feature. I’m feeling increasingly overwhelmed by the state of the world, and I think right now I need a distraction, something to give me a bit of motivation and inspiration while I work and write. So, I’m glad it’s come around again for another year.
This is our fourth go at Hooptober, and we’re excited to get back to it. Like in prior years, I’ll be taking part in the challenge alongside my partner, Djamilla. Hooptober has quickly become a Halloween tradition for us, and something we’ll likely keep doing until the day we meet the dirt.
I’m also looking forward to seeing everyone else’s lists and to reconnecting with some old Letterboxd friends, since I’ve been out of the game for a while.
The goal is to watch 31 films for the first time, wait, wait, wait, I mean 30 because of Wizard of Oz's addition to this year's list (RIP Lynch), plus the 3 films for extra credit (depending on how well we do), and to review them all. I promise, I'll try.
Good luck to everybody participating!
And a huge thanks to Cinemonster and Slappy McGee for another awesome year!
