Say it with me now. THIS. IS. A. MOTHERFUCKING. MASTERPIECE.
I loved this. LOVED it. Jack Nicholson was amazing. The cinematography was great. Every frame seemingly served a purpose. The direction was spectacular. This is my first Polanski experience and, putting all his personal transgressions of being a piece of shit aside, I liked what I saw here. I really want to check out more of his filmography now. The score was fantastic. This actually made me really appreciate the score in the video game L.A. Noire, a game I've played through many times. But the best thing about this is the screenplay. This is seriously a masterpiece in writing.
No scene is wasted. Every line of dialogue means something, even if you don't think it does at first. The twists are well-hinted at before they happen if you pay attention, making them all the more smarter., and it's a mystery that I didn't figure out within the first ten minutes. There are no plot-holes, everybody's motivations make sense and the ending...what a gut-puncher of an ending.
I fucking loved this!
