”Christ on a crutch. What kind of fascist hash foundry are you running here?”

The Holdovers, to me, feels like going backwards in time, or like going home. I saw Sideways a lifetime ago and the connection of the films is obvious. They both take a light touch to something very personal and meaningful. There was so much great comedy in Sideways, as there was here, and neither film forces you to feel. They present something that is like life and give you the space to connect to it. That’s really an important trick if you want to carry more meaning than a Hallmark card.

This was so fun and funny and easy to connect to. The characters work; they’re very likeable. The story feels real enough that in a world with 7+ billion people I have to wonder whether this exact movie has happened by chance in real life.

I’m very glad to have this film; it will be nice on holidays. I tend to find these rough because they trigger so much nostalgia, but this one is exactly right,I loved it, and you will too. Entirely recommended.

More holidays?
