FINAL VOTING ROUND HERE
Facts & Stats:
- 2,689 voters had at least one of the nominated films in their top 5. This translates to 96.5% of voters.
- Only 4 films qualified for a nominations without relying on second place votes from eliminated films. These were: Parasite, The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
- Parasite did exceptionally well, being mentioned by 1,915 voters (68.7%).
- There's a big gap between the top 15 and those below that. The top 15 were on at least 60 votes when eliminated, and were mentioned by at least 260 voters. All those below never reached more than 35 votes and had less mentions.
- Only 21 films had enough mentions (> 139) to have a chance of being nominated. This included all 9 of the Academy Award nominees.
- Despite being the 3rd most mentioned film (making the top five of 950 voters), The Irishman had trouble being nominated. It didn't reach the nomination threshold until Round 15 and only 180 voters ended with it at #1.
- Knives Out was incredibly unfortunate, being the sixth most mentioned film (693 mentions) but not getting nominated. It was mentioned by 200 more voters than Portrait of a Lady on Fire but that film had over double the initial first-place votes (129 vs 57). This shows the importance of ranking.
- Uncut Gems was the seventh most mentioned film and also didn't get nominated.
- Despite having 465 mentions, The Farewell wasn't able to pass 60 votes. Ranking really let some well loved films down.
- Some films appear low down on the list but were actually selected by many voters, just few placed them at #1. Examples include Hustlers (57 mentions, 2 votes), John Wick 3 (47 mentions, 2 votes), and I Lost My Body (38 mentions, 1 vote).
- Apollo 11 was the most picked film to have 0 votes. It made the top five of 36 voters but was never #1.
- Many people voted for disqualified films. Sorry to everyone who picked The Souvenir, High Life, Under the Silver Lake, Climax, Long Day's Journey into Night, Bacurau, and El Camino. It was pretty common for one of these films to be mentioned, but I did not record their statistics.
