HoopTober 8: Mosquito Takes Mandragon
Movie 66
4th of 6 films with a person of color as director or lead. (excluding Asian)
Um, OK, LOL - that's not what I thought I was signing onto when I picked this out for this challenge. The old "person of colour" rule is always a tricky one because, guess what? There aren't that many to choose from! Which is exactly the problem I suppose. Not to to mention I'm not a fan at all of Ganja and Hess which is the film everyone picks for this.
But, to Mr Boogedy. I don't even know why this thing exists - it's clearly a TV show but it seems to be a single episode and it's just very strange in not seeming to be part of anything bigger and yet seeming to have even less story substance than most anthology segments.
So this family - which features some familiar names like Richard Masur as the Dad, Kristy Swanson as the teenage daughter, Dave Faustino (Bud Bundy himself) as the older son, and the cute kid from Alf as the... cute kid - is played with the sort of exaggerated hamminess you'd expect from a comedy sketch. And this is very light hearted stuff, although the way the Dad constantly uses his trick gadgets - like, about three per minute, I'm not joking - just makes him seem like there's something wrong with him.
And then there's some ghostly stuff in the house they move into with this Mr Boogedy guy. To be honest, I lost track of what was going on. I was trying to pay attention but it was just so substanceless I kind of tuned out. I mean, this is not aimed at someone like me, let's face it.
Surprisingly, it did slightly freak out my daughter, so there's that. This is the same daughter who's been suggesting that maybe I should let her watch It. I told her "Darling, if this gives you the heebie jeebies, you probably should steer clear of It until you harden the hell up a bit." I didn't use those exact words, obviously - I can't stand that phrase "Heebie Jeebies".
