Ganja & Hess
★★

My Eureka Classics blu-ray of this movie contains a short commentary where an expert explains how the mis-match between the opening intertitles and where the plot begins, the lack of synchronisation between audio and visuals in many parts of the film, even the very clunky dialogue between characters, are all bold artistic choices by Bill Gunn.

I am sure I am just showing myself to be a philistine, and I'm aware how much this is appreciated as an important cultural artifact of cinema, but I am not smart enough to get past the alternative interpretation of all those things as maybe just, well, evidence of shoddy and amateurish film making?

I just couldn't get on board with this film. I didn't have a problem with the oblique story-telling and fragmentary nature of the editing and script. It's just really uninteresting and I got quite bored with it. It didn't help that I found Ganja to be a pretty repulsive character, who I'm guessing is supposed to be redeemed somehow although I didn't buy it. I was really impressed with Duane Jones, who has such a great screen presence, and one which contrasts so strongly with the role he played in Night of the Living Dead. But this is all too much dead weight for him to carry - just left me completely cold.
