Indian National Award Winners (Best Director)

All films to have won the Golden Lotus for the best direction in Indian Cinema from 1967-present.

6: Satyajit Ray
5: Adoor Gopalakrishnan
4: Mrinal Sen (only recipient for two different languages)

Aparna Sen is the only female director to be honoured by this award.

Languages to have won the award:
Bengali, English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Assamese, Tamil and Punjabi.


The National Film Awards is the most prominent film award ceremonies in India. Established in 1954, it has been administered, along with the International Film Festival of India and the Indian Panorama, by the Indian government's Directorate of Film Festivals since 1973.
