Dow Chemical made a bunch of money in Yugoslavia back in the 80s, but couldn't legally get the money out of the country because of local laws. So they decided to expand their portfolio of toxic chemicals by investing it in this movie, which was filmed in Yugoslavia.
The poster (possibly the best thing about this flick) gives you an idea of what they were going for. But they can't all be Ghostbusters. That should've been the tagline to this movie. Transylvania 6-5000: Because They Can't All Be Ghostbusters.
So what we have here is a PG comedy-horror about tabloid reporters going to Transylvania to look for...Frankenstein's monster...and the feel of it really does lie somewhere between the original Ghostbusters…

I can distinctly remember putting this on in childhood - way too often - and the audible groans of any adult supervision that was wandering through the room. At the time the frequency of play was no doubt due to my affinity for Ed Begley Jr., a love for all things Jeffrey Jones (...which I feel is a confession for another time), or Geena Davis' outfit introducing confusing concepts for a prepubescent mind. Regardless, the scowls that this dumb, slapstick comedy elicited from those around me definitely hammered shame home.

I'm gonna live my truth and say this was funny as fuck sorry. There's some Jim Carrey like humour going on here, obviously it's fucking stupid but so what? I love that you can tell even Jeff Goldblum can't believe he's actually in this but that's the charm I guess. There's too many characters you have to care about that's for sure. It's not peak of the horror genre but keeps that little mystery around that holds the silly scary vibes up pretty well.
This movie works exactly like a Scooby Doo episode. Just without a dog. Or Monster Squad but not evil. Definitely just lacking something significant, but I think this humour, complete unseriousness and pretty smooth directing works for me..

Ich habe auf Amazon gesehen, dass von "Transylvania 6-5000" demnächst eine Limited-Edition rauskommt. Ich kannte den Film nicht und wollte mir auf YouTube eigentlich einen Trailer ansehen. Aber siehe da, auf YouTube kann man sich sogar den vollständigen Film auf Deutsch ansehen.
Um was geht es?
Zwei Reporter (Jeff Goldblum und Ed Begley Jr.) einer Boulevardzeitung werden nach Transylvanien geschickt, um einen Artikel zu schreiben, nachdem ein Video von Frankenstein-Monster aufgetaucht ist. Die seltsamen Einheimischen machen sich über die beiden Reporter lustig aber die beiden lassen sich nicht beirrend und treffen schlussendlich nicht nur auf den finstern Dr. Malovaka, sondern auch auf einen Werwolf, eine Vampirfrau, eine Mumie und natürlich auch auf Frankensteins-Monster.
