BOROUX Foundation Filters absorb and block contaminants. The filters are made of activated carbon which attracts and absorbs molecules with a certain chemical charge. They stick to the carbon, like how a magnet attracts metal. The tiny pores of the carbon block are so small that they physically block and trap tiny particles. It's similar to a sieve or strainer.
Over 80 contaminants are filtered, including but not limited to; heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, forever chemicals, and microplastics.
We recommend replacing a pair of BOROUX Foundation Filters every 12 months. Filter lifespan will vary depending on source water quality and usage. A pair of filters is warrantied and guaranteed to effectively filter for 12 months.
A specialized blend of activated carbon. The base and stem is made of BPA-free, food-grade plastic.

Yes. The BOROUX Foundation Filter is compatible most gravity-fed systems.
No. However, the BOROUX Proactive Filters do filter fluoride!
The BOROUX Foundation Filters are certified to NSF/ANSI 42, NSF/ANSI/CAN 401, and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 by the Water Quality Association (WQA).
A subtle earthy or mineral-like taste may occur when first using new BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filters. This is completely normal and temporary, and caused by the filter media not being fully flushed or primed.
To eliminate the "off" taste:
Prime each filter for at least 10 minutes using the blue silicone priming tool with higher water pressure.
Or
Try using the Automatic Filter Primer with hot water (~100ºF).
Yes, BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filters are compatible with Berkey® systems and attach to the stems of Black Berkey® Filters.
The BOROUX Proactive Filter threads onto and attaches to the stem of the BOROUX Foundation Filter. The water passes through the BOROUX Foundation Filter and into the center of the BOROUX Proactive Filter. The inner layer is made of high-efficiency granulated carbon. Then, the water filters through the proprietary nano-carbon outer layer. With the patent-pending Upflow Design of the stainless steel shell, the water stays in contact with the outer layer for a prolonged period of time, providing superior filtration. The filtered water exits the top of the shell through the outlet holes. This allows for a nearly uniform use of the entire surface of the fluoride filters, from bottom to top.
We have not yet tested for arsenic.
It's recommend to replace filters at 1,000 gallons, which is approximately 6-12 months. The filter lifespan will vary depending on the source water, and usage.
The inner layer is granulated carbon--small, loose granules of a mix of different carbons packed into the center of the cylinder filter. The outer layer of the filter is a nano-carbon. This blend of specialized carbon is molded into the cylindrical shape.
The shell is 304-grade stainless steel.

Yes, it's a one-to-one ratio. For every BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter, there should be a BOROUX Foundation Filter.
Yes, the stainless steel shell is essential for proper performance. It critical for the Upflow Design, which directs water from the bottom up—slowing the flow rate and increasing contact time between water and filtration media. This optimized interaction enhances fluoride reduction and overall effectiveness.
BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filters are not available to be sold in California or Iowa due to state-specific regulations and compliance requirements. These states have unique laws regarding the sale of water filtration products that make certain contaminant reduction claims.
We're actively working to meet the necessary certification standards so we can make these filters available to residents in both states in the future.
The BOROUX Legacy systems are a gravity-fed type of water filter system. There is an upper chamber and a lower chamber. The BOROUX Foundation Filters are installed in the upper chamber. The optional BOROUX Proactive Filters attach the stem of Foundation Filters and hang in the lower chamber. Water is poured into the upper chamber, and then gravity pulls the water down through the BOROUX Foundation Filters and into the lower chamber. Drinking water can then be poured out from a spigot located at the base of the lower chamber.
All BOROUX products are designed in Colorado. The stainless steel elements are sourced from a highly reputable, technologically-advanced factory in China.
Yes, stainless steel can rust, although it is less likely to do so compared to other types of steel. Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a protective oxide layer on its surface that helps prevent corrosion. However, if this protective layer is damaged or if the stainless steel is exposed to harsh environmental conditions, such as high levels of humidity or chloride-containing substances, it can still rust. Regular maintenance and proper care can help prevent rusting in stainless steel.
Clean the stainless steel parts and pieces every month with warm water and dish soap.
Scrub the Foundation Filters every 3-6 months with warm water and an abrasive sponge.
On a full charge, you can prime a minimum of 10 filters before needing to recharge the pump.
It takes approximately 90 seconds to fully prime one filter.
The light on the Automatic Filter Primer displays the current battery status.
If unsure whether the pump is working correctly, try fully charging it and checking the light again.
No, the Priming Pump is not waterproof. Do not fully submerge the Priming Pump in water.
Yes. The Priming Pump is compatible with Black Berkey Filters as well as BOROUX Foundation and Proactive Fluoride Filters (adapter included with fluoride filters).
On the contrary—using the Priming Pump helps ensure complete and consistent priming, actually extending your filter’s lifespan and optimizing filtration performance.
Improper priming can lead to cloudy water, reduced flow rate, uneven filtration, and a shorter filter lifespan. The Priming Pump ensures consistent, proper priming for optimal filter performance.

If your filter won't prime, try:
It's normal for 1-2 inches of water to remain in the upper chamber. Because the legacy system is a gravity-fed water filter, it relies on the pressure and weight of water to push down and through the filters. As it empties into the lower chamber, there's less weight to push it down. Also, water cannot pass through the plastic Stem Saver.
White residue is mineral buildup. It is harmless. If visible on your black filter, run under water and wipe off. If visible on your chamber or spigot, use a mixture of half water and half vinegar to scrub off. You can soak the spigot in this mixture.
If your system is leaking at the spigot, check for correct installation.
If your system is leaking where the two chambers meet, you're overfilling your system. Only fill the top chamber if the lower chamber is empty.
