Little help from the Linux geeks in the audience?

So I got around to upgrading my Ubuntu from Edgy to Feisty. A few minor things broke; they're irritating, but they're not the subject of this post. Neverball worked fine, except for some crackling in the sound. I still can't get past Mehdi level 10.

Synaptic showed a bunch of Beryl packages were available. I'd heard captainspam and toumal tried and liked it, so I decided to see what the fuss was. I installed the packages, mangled my xorg.conf to make window decorators work, and decided it probably wasn't for me. Then I tried Neverball, saw that everything was black (no textures anywhere), and decided Beryl definitely wasn't for me. All my GL apps were hosed, but proceeded as if there was nothing wrong; it's as if the Black Window Bug imploded on itself. Yet Beryl itself worked just fine.

I uninstalled all the Beryl packages and reverted my xorg.conf, and all my GL stuff is still black! The closest thing I can get to an error message is "texture font print error: out of memory" from the Carousel screensaver.

Any ideas on what I can do to get my GL stuff back? There's more details here where I first posted a call for help, but it must be TL;DR for all the help I'm not getting.

In other news, my parents are coming up to visit me this coming weekend for my birthday. I'm really looking forward to having the company. And Dad's going to help me shop for cars, which will be fun. So much the better if I end up buying one, since the long commute hasn't ceased sucking my soul from my body.
