Elegant central hotel near to all sites and shops.
Pros:

The situation of the hotel was perfect. Hotel was elegant and what you would expect from a five star Hotel.
Staffs friendly and helpful.

Cons:

Hotel decoration in parts was a little tired, lights in wardrobe did not work. But I believe that the hotel is closing for a refurb, which is good as it would be a sad loss to the town if it closed altogether. Restaurant could not supply a club sandwich unless we went to our room , where we could order one on room service so husband was slightly disappointed that he couldn't get a late night snack in the bar.

Pros:

The staff are really friendly and helpful.
We had afternoon tea which was delicious & really good value.
Breakfast in the morning was ok.

Cons:

The only nit pick, toast came out same time as my cereal, so had gone cold by the time I was ready to eat it.

Excellent location. Room and bed very comfortable. Food ok-ish but nothing special.
Pros:

The room was very comfortable and the turret window seat was an added bonus as it overlooked the Eastgate clock.
The front door and reception staff were very helpful and welcoming.
The location, just inside the city walls, was excellent with easy access to all parts of the city for easy sightseeing.

Cons:

Not particularly impressed with the attitude of some of the staff in the restaurant given it’s a 5 star hotel as there was a distinct lack of welcome on arrival in the restaurant in the early evening.
Table service for breakfast - not a buffet. Limited continental breakfast included but anything cooked is extra.(£12.50).
Both our key cards gave up the ghost on day 2 and we requested replacements. All we had to give was our room number (not our names), which is concerning given recent events in the news.

Pros:

Great location, beautiful building, and mostly friendly staff.

Cons:

For the price charged, a full cooked breakfast should be included. Instead, there was an additional charge for hot food, and the continental menu was very limited. Parts of the hotel are very tired and in need of an upgrade.

I forgot my key card one day and asked reception for a new card. They replaced this without asking any sort of security questions (only my room number). Given recent events on the news at other hotels, this should not have been done!

Going downhill
Pros:

Staff were friendly and very accomodating

Cons:

The room pricing, we paid £153 per night for a basic room, going off the fact it was apparently a 5 star hotel and the best in the area.
Unfortunately we went to our room and it was dusty, the bath was leaking water and the shower head was loosely handing into the wall, when you pay more than double the price for the area you're in you expect a reason for higher rates
