Bunker BS-4 “Lány” | Sights in Bratislava
In the district of Petržalka, just across the Danube River from Bratislava’s city center, lies a series of concrete fortresses. These bunkers are remnants of a defensive line built by Czechoslovakia between 1935 and 1938. Bunker BS-4, known by its nickname “Lány,” is one of the most significant of these fortifications. It stands as a powerful reminder of a tense period in European history, when a young nation prepared to defend itself against the rising threat of Nazi Germany. Unlike many of its abandoned neighbors, this bunker has been carefully restored by a group of dedicated volunteers.
Today, Bunker BS-4 serves as the Czechoslovak Fortification Museum, and it offers visitors a direct and immersive look into the pre-war era. The museum is operated by the military history club Múzeum petržalského opevnenia. The volunteers have painstakingly re-equipped the bunker to its original 1938 condition, so a visit is like stepping back in time. The bunker is a key historical sight for anyone interested in military history, and its location near the Austrian border provides a tangible connection to the former Iron Curtain that once divided the continent.

History of Bunker BS-4
Bunker BS-4, known by its nickname “Lány,” is a key part of the fortifications that were built by Czechoslovakia between 1935 and 1938. These defenses were created as a response to the rising threat of Nazi Germany. The fortifications guarded most of the Czechoslovak border, and the section in Bratislava was particularly strong. This bunker was one of 15 built in the Petržalka district, and its purpose was to help defend the capital city. The structure is a heavy infantry blockhouse, and it was designed to withstand a significant attack. It represents a major feat of military engineering from the interwar period.
The bunker was designed for a crew of 32 soldiers, and it was armed with anti-tank cannons and heavy machine guns. Its location was strategically chosen to cover the open fields, as “Lány” is a Czech word for fields or meadows. However, the bunker never fulfilled its intended defensive purpose. Following the Munich Agreement in September 1938, Nazi Germany annexed the Petržalka district in October. As a result, this entire powerful defensive line was surrendered without a fight. The bunker stands today as a silent monument to this tense and pivotal moment in European history.

Mobilizácia
Mobilizácia, or Mobilization, is an annual event that takes place at Bunker BS-4 “Lány”. This event commemorates the general mobilization of the Czechoslovak army in 1938 in response to the threat from Nazi Germany. During the event, the military history club that runs the museum organizes several demonstrations for the public. These often include historical reenactments of military life and combat scenarios from the period, bringing the history of the site to life.
Visitors to the Mobilizácia event can enjoy the opportunity to see historical military equipment from the Second World War era in action. This often includes displays of historic vehicles, weapons, and uniforms. The event aims to provide an educational experience for visitors of all ages, and it is a major gathering for military history enthusiasts from Slovakia and neighboring countries. The event serves as a living history lesson, and it honors the memory of the soldiers who were prepared to defend their country.
Bunker Museum
The bunker is made available to the public by the military history club Múzeum petržalského opevnenia. Their English name is the Czechoslovak Fortification Museum. The museum was opened in 2011, and it has prided itself on remaining free of charge for all the time it has been open. The aim of the museum is to educate visitors on the subject of the fortifications. It also aims to teach about pre-war history and the situation just before the Second World War. The museum is a voluntary project, and it was created as the initiative of a group of longtime friends who are passionate about history.
