IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball brings on alum Ryan Johnston and former Major Leaguer Blake Hawksworth to complete staff following a pair of summer departures.
Anteater coaching staff saw volunteer assistant Mitch Holland earn a full-time assistant spot with Loyola Marymount early in the summer after four seasons on UCI's staff. Recently, Director of Operations Bryce Stowell shifted into a different role within UC Irvine Athletics opening up the spots for Johnson and Hawksworth.
Ryan Johnston returns to the program as the volunteer assistant after graduating following the 2019 season as a two-way player. He continued on to Concordia Irvine where he played his grad season in 2020 and returned in 2021 as a grad assistant while attaining his master's in coaching and athletic administration. Johnston also spent time coach in the West Coast League with Walla Walla Sweets.
Blake Hawksworth returns to the Big West where he coached for the 2017 season at Cal State Fullerton. He tripped to Omaha with the Titans that season posting a 3.64 staff ERA that year. Since, he's coached for a season at Grand Canyon University in 2020 and last season coached at JSerra High School helping them to a CIF Championship. Hawksworth was born and raised in Vancouver, B.C. and grew up in the state of Washington playing at Eastlake High School and Bellevue Community College before he was drafted in the 28th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2001. Hawksworth grinded for eight years before finally getting the call and making his Major League debut that he would work into three years of service making 124 career appearances for the Cardinals and Dodgers before retiring in 2014 where he's focused on coaching and his work as an MLB Certified Player Agent with the Scott Boras Corporation.
