PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jaylan Gainey, Kino Lilly Jr., and Tamenang Choh of the Brown men's basketball team have received All-Ivy recognition following the 2021-22 season, as announced by the league office Tuesday. Gainey has been named the Defensive Player of the Year and Lilly the Rookie of the Year, while both Gainey and Choh have been named to the All-Ivy Second Team.
It is Gainey's second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year nod after he also received the honor following the 2019-20 season. With no award presented during the 2020-21 campaign, Gainey becomes the first player in the league to be tabbed as the top defensive player in back-to-back seasons since Brown's Cedric Kuakumensah during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 years. Gainey led the Ivy League with 63 blocked shots, 2.2 per game, good for the fifth-most in program history. He also set a new career-high with 6.9 rebounds per game, putting him at fifth in the league.
Gainey is also a member of the All-Ivy Second Team for the first time in his career. His 9.3 points per game are a career-best mark, while his 70.3 field goal percentage led the Ivy League and set a new single-season program record.
Lilly is the first Bear to be named Ivy Rookie of the Year since Desmond Cambridge during the 2017-18 season and is just the sixth in program history. He finished the season ninth in the Ivy League in scoring (13.3), tenth in assists (2.4), sixth in steals (1.4), fifth in three-point percentage (39.9), and third in threes made (2.5). All five marks were tops among Ivy rookies. Lilly's 387 points on the season are the third most by a Brown freshman in program history.
Choh has been named to the All-Ivy Second Team for the third straight season. He led the Bears with 14.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, ranking him eighth, second, and third in the Ivy League respectively. His point per game average is a new career high. Choh put together seven 20-point performances this season, including his first-ever 30-point game against Yale on Jan. 17.
Gainey has also been named to the Academic All-Ivy League Team.
