book/author recs?

It's that time again. What books/authors have you read that you'd recommend?

I'm trying to move away from fantasy (as I have a ton of those books around I've yet to crack open). I'm about to finish As Meat Loves Salt (lol, finally!) so ... recommendations, anyone?

ETA: I've been wondering, after having read a story about Arthur and books, what authors/books the Inception characters would read?

NCIS

hmm.... so I may have somehow gotten snagged into NCIS and White Collar fandom, all in the same day.

I watched 'Flesh and Blood' for the Tony/Gibbs, and it was a very enjoyable episode. Any episode recommendations that are Tony/Gibbs-centric? Or fic. Fic is good too. I don't plan on watching all of it because it's been on the air for 7 years (I think?) so any help would be very much appreciated :)

Fanvid recs: Star Trek

These are all amazing in their own right.

ST 2009:
Trip Like I Do by un4scene.
Fun, kickass, ensemble/gen movie vid, but with extra dashes of Kirk especially.

We Are One by Kradashi. (Kirk/Spock)
Touching and lovely and beautiful. One of the more emotionally moving vids I've seen yet.

You Spin Me Round by ImaginarySanity. (Kirk/Spock)
Fun and awesome. 'Nuff said.

ST TOS
I Want You by ImaginarySanity. (Kirk/Spock)
If you're a K/S fan and have glanced at YouTube, I'm sure you're familiar with this vid artist. I especially loved the song used here and the lyrics, and the mood just really fit for these two.

My Only One by ImaginarySanity. (Kirk/Spock)
I think you'll see a pattern emerging...

You Found Me by SeverusSnapehasmyhea. (Kirk/Spock)
The effects on this can be a little overwhelming at times, but it is very beautifully done nonetheless and absolutely stunning in combination with the song. Editing is great, and this actually has both nuTrek and TOS source material.

random thought about writing and a rec

I've been accused of writing stuff that doesn't go anywhere. Plotwise.

In my creative writing class (semesters ago), someone commented with, "But nothing really happens in her story."

And I wasn't offended or anything. Never been really good with grand plots and all. And the professor said, "Well, does anything really happen in real life? It's about writing what you know. Some of the best writing is about things that might seem ordinary, but are full of meaning."

Not to say that my writing was particularly good.

It was really an insightful piece of advice. And I fall back on that everytime I write something. Because I can't deal with plot. I just can't. It's a big obstacle for me when I write now. I worry that I don't have a solid plot. I worry that I meander and spend far too much time on the small things.

But it's ok.

Also, so this post isn't completely pointless:

A Bruce Wayne/Jim Gordon fic that will blow you away: Go Your Own Way by lettered. Start with chapter 1! There's kink, and lots of porn, and thinky porn, no less. And lots of emotional porn, too, and angst and saying things without really saying them. And just all around a gorgeous, beautiful piece of writing. A very interesting and new take on Bruce Wayne as a character, and the Bruce/Gordon relationship. The author's summary: Bruce Wayne spends time on Jim Gordon's side of the tracks, as it were. If you only read one Gordon/Bruce fic, read this one.

Ooo, also. I've started writing Birds of Prey fic that aspires to be my first femmeslash. Blame it on the dvd set I just bought and devoured. I remember when it was on the WB, and I loved it but don't think I ever finished watching it.

And I've managed to cobble together a masterlist stickypost of all my fannish works here.

AND! New Supernatural Thursday night! And BSG Friday!

the best fics you're not reading

...in other words, The Dark Knight recs.

Batman/Gordon:
Control Issues by ragdoll987
Author's summary: Batman needs something from Gordon and won't take no for an answer.
Really hot. Just. Yeah.

Anomaly, Being Realistic, & Reveal by cimness
3 separate fics that are beyond hot, they're scorching. She calls them PWP's, but there is definite emotional substance and it's so wonderfully, gorgeously written, even if you don't normally read PWP's, you'll find yourself immersed in her writing.

Batman/Joker:
Rapaciously by salmon_pink
Author's summary: No rhyme, no reason, no apparent purpose.
Wherein the Joker is disturbing and unsettling, as he should be.

Simple Request by ehmaz
Author's summary: Bruce has a simple request for the Joker; will he accept, or is Bruce breaking one of their unspoken rules?
This was hot and oddly touching at the same time, which is hard to achieve with this pairing.

All's Fair... by saphron_girl
Author's summary: The Joker doesn't like having an unfair advantage on his rival...
Sex and violence. No fancy plot or great declarations of love, but it is so realistically Batman & Joker, it hurts. A really interesting look into their...relationship.

Slipping Into Entropy by razothredfire and loony_lucifer - WIP
Read everything here, starting from the beginning. And look at the gorgeous artwork, too :D

Kisses & Screams by madwabbit - WIP
Author's summary: The Joker’s back with a vengeance and he’s ready to watch Gotham Burn. And this time, maybe Batman won’t be able to stop him...because madness is like gravity--all it takes is a little push.
Don't cheat! Read starting from part 1, though I linked from the most recent chapter she's posted because it has the links to all previous chapters. A really enjoyable, roller-coaster ride, both light and dark.

Equilibrium by quakewithfear
So the author sees this as Joker/Harvey, but I also see a great deal of Joker/Batman. It's amazing what they've done here. A bleak but intense character study on both Joker and Harvey, in a way, where so much is said with so little. Definitely a unique story.

Gravity by interpretthis
Author's summary: It only takes Batman a week to get caught and thrown in Arkham, the Joker’s parting laugh still ringing against the base of his skull as they process him for confinement.
Just read it. I love how this author writes Joker, and Bruce as well. Insightful, gut-wrenching, exploration of the Batman/Joker dynamic.

And I have more but ... I'll just direct you to darkknightfic and nowweretwo (Batman/Gordon) and encourage you to read everything there :D
