Geomembrane definition

Are you looking for a geomembrane? Membrane Systems Europe offers you the right geomembrane for covering or storing liquids or gases.

A geomembrane is a synthetic membrane, possibly with a reinforced textile inside, with very low permeability, used as a liner or barrier in storage systems to control liquids and gases.

Membrane Systems Europe applies various geomembrane grades (polyvinyl chloride, low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, among others) in its double membrane roofs, single membrane roofs, biogas domesbiogas balloons, foil basins, liners or floating covers.

MSE PVC geomembranes application for biogas application

For MSE double membrane roofs, the outer membranes are always made of special biogas geotextile made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with a polyester (PES) reinforced textile. The inner membrane and ground membrane are also made of this PVC quality.

The textile provides the strength of the material. The tensile strength varies for the TYPE I material, 800 g/m2, with 3400 / 3000 N / 5 am, to the TYPE V membrane, 1500 g/m2, with 10,000 N / 9,000 N / 5 cm. Adhesive strength ranges from 150 N / 5 cm to 190 N / 5 cm.

Gas permeability is always lower than 500 cm3/m2/day/bar pressure. Temperature resistant from -/- 30 degrees Celsius to + 70 degrees Celsius. All products are flame retardant.

MSE Geomembranes made of Polyethylene (LDPE) or Polypropylene (PP) with Low Density for Biogas covers.

Internal membranes for double-membrane applications can be made not only of PVC geomembranes, but also of LDPE or PP geomembranes. LDPE and PP geomembranes do not have reinforced textiles inside. Therefore, these membranes are not dimensionally stable. Therefore, the inner membrane of a double-membrane canopy is larger than the outer membrane (made of reinforced PVC), so the outer membrane can absorb all the forces on the inner membrane.

Polypropylene and polyethylene have good chemical resistance.

Gas permeability is about 250 – 300 cm3/m2/day/Bar pressure, similar to PVC.

MSE Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) or Polypropylene (PP) Geomembranes for Manure Covering

MSE bed liners can be made of reinforced PVC geomembrane, but in most cases they are an LDPE liner. These LDPE liners have no reinforced textile on the inside. In some countries, EPDM is also used for liners.

For the top liner, MSE suggests a reinforced geomembrane, such as PVC. LDPE liners are also used (North America), but they do not have the same strength as PVC liners.

MSE Polypropylene Geomembrane Application in Concrete Protection.

MSE is a distributor of Ten Cate Geotextiles polypropylene Concrete Protection (CPR). CPR provides perfect protection against corrosion of concrete structures due to chemical attack and moisture penetration. It significantly extends the service life of the concrete structure.

CPR consists of a loop fabric wrapped with heavy-duty polypropylene specifically designed for the aggressive climate in the biogas digester.

The use of geomembranes offers a host of benefits, including:

  • Environmental protection: Geomembranes serve as a barrier to prevent pollutants from entering the soil or groundwater. As a result, geomembranes help prevent soil and water pollution, reducing the ecological impact of industrial activities.
  • Water management: In water management functions, geomembranes are used to seal water storage facilities, such as reservoirs, ponds and canals. By creating a watertight barrier, they help prevent leakage and maintain water quality.
  • Waste management: In waste management systems, geomembranes are often used as liners in landfills and wastewater treatment facilities. They prevent toxic substances from leaking from waste and causing contamination of soil and groundwater.
  • Power generation: In the renewable energy sector, geomembranes are used in biogas plants for storing and covering biogas reservoirs. In doing so, they contribute to the efficient production and management of biogas, an important source of renewable energy.
  • Construction protection: In construction projects, geomembranes are used for concrete protection and corrosion prevention. They provide a protective layer against chemical attack and moisture penetration, extending the life of concrete structures.
