Del Toro Definitely 'Hobbit' Director? [06 Feb 2008|03:00pm]
From an email conversation with Del Toro's casting director, Jeremy Zimmerman:

'I met today Jeremy Zimmerman, who has done the casting for Guillermo Del Toro’s four films. He’s known Del Toro four six years and says they are 'mates'. I asked him if Del Toro will direct The Hobbit. He was a bit taken back, almost surprised that I would even ask. "Yes, yes, he’s doing it." After a while he said: "He’s got the Ring", and smiled.'

Del Torro for 'The Hobbit'? [04 Feb 2008|04:11pm]
"I think what happens very often is that these rumours have a way of becoming real or not. I don’t expect The Hobbit to be troublesome. But you know, then again, it may never happen… or it may!" -Del Torro

Elijah Wood game for 'The Hobbit' [11 Jan 2008|03:10pm]
"I haven’t spoken to him directly about it [but] I’ve e-mailed him, and as far as I know the two films that they’re doing, one will be ‘The Hobbit’ and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” the once and future Frodo enthused to MTV News, possibly confirming rumors that the second planned film would not be a Part II, but instead a narrative bridge."

'"If I’m asked to go back and revisit that character and it makes sense, I would love to. I would absolutely love to," he said.'

Karl Urban talks 'The Hobbit' [11 Jan 2008|02:09pm]
'Q: What did you think about the recent news that Peter Jackson is going ahead and producing the Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit?

Urban: Oh, I think that it's really fantastic that New Line and Peter were able to put aside their differences and that Peter is going to once again bring Middle Earth to the big screen.

Q: A lot of our readers have said they can't imagine The Hobbit in anyone else's hands.

Urban: Well, he did such an overwhelmingly fantastic job with that trilogy, it's hard to conceive of anybody laying their fingerprints on it.

Christopher Lee hopes for a place in 'The Hobbit' [10 Jan 2008|05:32pm]
'Lee not only has impressive knowledge of golf and film, he also in something of an expert on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien.

"I remember first reading `The Lord of the Rings' back in the 1950s," Lee said. "I thought they would make great movies, but technically it couldn't be done back then. I envisioned myself playing Gandolf (eventually played by Ian McKellen) but I did end up getting the part of Saruman."

Noting that it was recently announced that Peter Jackson had agreed to film a couple of prequels about "The Hobbit," Lee said he hoped that "Mr. Jackson" might found a place for him in those movies.

"I don't know if that will happen but I would certainly be interested in doing it," Lee said.

It would be surprising if Jackson couldn't find a part for Christopher Lee, a man who has been a movie icon for more than 50 years and is still going strong.

No date for the meeting is known yet, but the personel are being lined up as you read this post.'

PJ will only Produce [21 Dec 2007|03:44pm]
'All is well again in the Tolkien-to-cinema universe with the announcement yesterday that New Zealand director-impresario Peter Jackson has both settled his long-brewing law suit against New Line and will in fact, with partner Fran Walsh, supervise the making of two Hobbit films for them.'

PJ: "I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. 'The Lord of the Rings' is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world."

New 'Hobbit' Film Rumour [02 Dec 2007|03:21pm]
Let’s hope that it’s just a rumour, and nothing more:

A website called MarketSaw reports that Peter Jackson is confirmed to be directing two films based on ‘The Hobbit’ and both will be presented in 3D format. Then, after The Hobbit films are released (2010,2011 respectively), the original trilogy will be converted to 3D after the release of the two Hobbit Films.

The author of the web post sends along this excerpt from an e-mail between poster and his (possibly incorrect) source:

No casting info yet. But they are looking forward to bringing back Sir Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Hugo Weaving. For these 3 actors, the chances are really good. I’m not sure about the release date, but I think 2010 for the first film, and 2011 for second, is what they are trying to get into everybody’s calendar. So it would make sense with my information of following with the converted Trilogy in 2012 – 2014. That is all happening, but there must be said, that there is a possibility of +/- 1 to 2 years to the whole thing. If I get to know more, I try to tell ya.

However, TheOneRing.net states that MarketSaw is not an entirely reliable website:

If we judge this website based on the amount of junk advertising, we can pretty much write this off as an unconfirmed pipe-dream.

I sure hope they’re right. The only thing worse than a non-Jackson Hobbit film is a Hobbit film in 3-D.

Raimi Talks 'The Hobbit' Again [28 Nov 2007|03:45pm]
“It’s not really my choice. The Hobbit has always been Peter Jackson’s picture, and I believe from what I’ve read that he is back in negotiations with New Line Cinema, and like all fans of his, I’m hoping that he’ll make it. So until I hear differently, I’m going to assume that’s what’s going to happen. Now, if he ever decides not to make it, I would love to be considered for it.”

Sean Astin on 'The Hobbit' [06 Oct 2007|12:59pm]
"I've said since before we started making the movies and have never wavered for a second that 'The Hobbit' would get made. The fanbase wants it. There's too much money to be made doing it. It seems like maybe the time is now."

And what of the fact that Samwise is born AFTER Bilbo leaves Bag End?

"But obviously Peter is so creative that he can find a way to connect that character if he wanted to. And he knows that anytime, anywhere, he could just make a phone call or send an email and I’d get on a plane and go anywhere he wanted me to."

"It would bum me out is if somebody else played Samwise. But I suppose he could hire a little kid to play Samwise because he’s the son of Hamfast Gamgee and Hamfast [is approximately] the age of Bilbo."

Or maybe Astin himself could play the Old Gaffer in a bit of cross-generational casting?

"No, I haven’t [talked to Peter about doing a cameo in ‘The Hobbit’ but it’ll be interesting to see what he does. He’s the master."

Good news for The Hobbit? [04 Oct 2007|05:18pm]
New Line Agrees to Pay 'RINGS' Fine-

New Line is accepting a fine handed to them from a Federal Judge for the failures of handing over documents as requested, something Peter Jackson has said from the beginning causing the court case. The $125,000 fine could have been contested or sought a review which would have taken more time in this ongoing court battle. Instead, they're accepting the decision. New Line's attorney Robert Schwartz wrote, "Mindful that the court's resources are valuable and limited, New Line will neither oppose that award nor seek review" of the order.

Entertainment Weekly Talks 'The Hobbit'-

"But now the legal battle that's kept The Lord of the Rings' prequel, The Hobbit, hung up for years — a bitter feud between Rings director Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema co-chairman Robert Shaye — may finally be nearing resolution. For once, there's reason to be cautiously optimistic. At this writing, no agreements have been announced and details of the negotiations are sketchy (neither New Line nor Jackson's camp would comment to EW on any aspect of this story), but sources close to the talks tell us that they're detecting a lot less frost in the air, and that a deal may be reached that could help usher J.R.R. Tolkien's maiden Middle-earth masterpiece to screens before the end of the decade. ''There has been a détente,'' says one insider. There is now the beginning of a discourse between Peter Jackson and New Line that's running parallel to the litigation proceedings.''

Round One: Peter Jackson!! [21 Sep 2007|03:48pm]
Peter Jackson has won the first round in his fight with New Line Cinema over profits from The Lord of the Rings. A judge has fined New Line, $125,000 (NZ=$169,000) for failing to turn over court-ordered documents in the case. The Hollywood Reporter said Jackson's lawyers might also be allowed to inspect New Line's files if the studio did not produce several audits within 21 days.

Cate Blanchett Game for 'The Hobbit' [20 Sep 2007|08:25pm]
""I haven't heard a thing [about a potential 'Hobbit' film]," she declared. "But, oh God, I would love to work with Hugo [Weaving] and Peter [Jackson] again."

Blanchett is the latest "Lord of the Rings" actor to tell MTV that she'd consider playing her character again for a prequel series. Like Viggo Mortensen or Orlando Bloom, Blanchett's character doesn't exactly appear in "The Hobbit," although thanks to J.R.R. Tolkien's extensive later backstories, her insertion would be completely unproblematic. In fact, it's hard to envision a "Hobbit" film WITHOUT Galadriel, particularly if the film covers any of the period between the defeat of Smaug and the War of the Ring."

Martin Freeman for the Hobbit? [18 Sep 2007|08:15pm]
"...But one actor we wouldn't want to see return is actually the actor when it comes to a Hobbit movie. While wizards and elves and part elf-men all age slowly (or not at all), hobbits get old quick, and we can't imagine a 51-year-old Bilbo played by the same actor who brought him to life on his eleventy-first birthday.

But if not Ian, than who? How about "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" star Martin Freeman? Internet scuttlebutt has him front and center as a replacement candidate, and no one can argue that he doesn't looks the part. So when we caught up with "The Office" alum while he was promoting his new film "The Good Night," we asked him to address the hubbub...'
