In-School Mentoring

Our In-School Mentoring (ISM) Program provides students with a role model and friend to talk to, all from the familiar comfort and convenience of their school.

How it works:

  • Students in grades 1-12 will be matched with a like-minded mentor.
  • Students will visit with their mentor during the school year for 1 hour per week between the hours of 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Each visit follows the 20-20-20 model: 20 minutes of getting to know each other, 20 minutes of academic support, and 20 minutes of free activity time (student’s choice).
  • ISM programs are offered in partnership with select schools in Edmonton, St. Albert, Strathcona County, and Parkland County.
  • Each match is supported by a BGCBigs Mentoring Facilitator. Mentoring Facilitators are available to answer any questions and to help matches achieve their goals together.

Minimum Commitment: 1 hour per week throughout the school year

Availability: We run ISM programs at partnered schools in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert and Parkland County.

When & Where: At the same time each week during the school day at school

Please note that your child must attend one of the schools listed on the application to participate in this program. To learn about our other mentoring opportunities, click here to learn more about our Community Mentoring Programs.

Out-of-School-Time

Through our Out-of-School-Time (OST) programs, BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area creates safe, welcoming spaces for young people to connect, learn, and grow beyond the school day. Our programs operate in schools participating in All in for Youth, a collaborative initiative that brings community organizations together to support student success and well-being.

During the critical hours after school, youth take part in engaging activities that support healthy development, including recreation, creative expression, leadership opportunities, academic support, and opportunities to build positive peer relationships. Programs are designed to strengthen confidence, belonging, and resilience while giving youth a place where they feel safe, supported, and valued.

Working closely with school staff and community partners, our OST programs respond to the unique needs of each school community and help ensure students have the supports they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

We partner with 5 different school sites in Edmonton to provide out-of-school-time (OST) mentoring programs to students who attend these locations.
