I would highly recommend Berkeley Place to anyone starting a renovation project, especially one involving a listed building or conservation elements. From our first meeting with Nick to project management by Lucy and Alec, we were continually impressed by their professionalism, competence, communication and execution. Our barn renovation undoubtedly progressed more quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively because of Berkeley Place’s involvement. They more than earned their very reasonable fees. 

As soon as we saw the for-sale advert for Bloomfield House we knew we had to go and have a look. The building was amazing but what horrors might be hidden beneath the floorboards and wallpaper?

We were truly daunted by the prospect of purchasing and renovating this large Grade II Listed Georgian building. So, we met Nick from Berkeley Place and had another wander around the building. His level of experience and expertise was very clear and instantly we could see a safe path forward. A plan was formed, and we went ahead with the purchase and renovation.

Throughout the process, Alec was great, ensuring the right people were on the job and taking care of every detail, from the roof all the way down to the cellar. The outstanding result was achieved thanks to Berkeley Place. 

As the end of the first phase of our project has reached a conclusion and with Lucy off on maternity leave shortly, we thought it was an opportune time to give some feedback on the service we have received.

Lucy has been terrific. It would have been a very different project for us without such a savvy project manager and we were very glad she was part of our team. The weekly meeting was invaluable and there were plenty of occasions where we didn’t know the answer to certain questions asked by contractors. She often saw a different and more practical approach. The things we didn’t need were just as important as the things we did need. Whilst we went above our original budget, I do believe that Lucy alleviated some of the stress and time associated. Stress and time are underrated components in these projects.

She got this project done on time and had to proactively make this happen. If it wasn’t for her assertiveness with the kitchen company for example, we might be eating turkey this Christmas somewhere other than our kitchen.

She’s a great communicator (whilst I am not always!) and was invaluable when it came to the council, the neighbours party wall and when we had to make her aware of the original electrician’s unprofessional conversations on his phone. Of course, her attention to detail with regards to the snagging was great and the icing on the cake for the project.

My internal dialogue when it comes to business is to always ask the question ‘Would I go into battle with this person?’ and with Lucy it’s a resounding yes.

It was a great decision to choose Berkeley Place, and our kitchen is genuinely a better product than we actually envisaged. We have spent more time using the space than we even foresaw which is great testament to your business.

I have no hesitation in recommending Berkeley Place to anyone undergoing any major home improvement or renovation works. We renovated a listed townhouse in Clifton together with Nick’s team remotely from abroad. They were able to oversee the entire project and manage the works according to a very tight timeline. The team at Berkeley Place, in particular Lucy, were incredibly responsive and attentive, a real pleasure to work with. They also pulled together a great trade team of skilled professionals to carry out the various strands of work required. We would not have pulled off such a high spec renovation without them.

I should say that Lucy has been an absolute star throughout the refurb.

We’ve had a couple of tricky moments, but she’s steered us through with a skill and good humour that belies her years- we were astonished when she told us how old she is.

And she manages all these craggy (and sometimes quite grumpy) contractors with great aplomb, getting them to do exactly what she wants with a smile and twisting them several time round her little finger.

She’s also managed the costs very well and kept us within our budget – which looked at one time as though it might spiral completely out of control.

All in all, we are very pleased – she is a great asset to Berkeley.

Thanks to Alec and Tom, without whom we wouldn’t have been able to navigate the house refurb rollercoaster. My advice to anyone knocking down their house would be, “Don’t do it”, but if you’ve ignored that, then Berkeley Place is a great outfit to help manage the stress and the cash. Having someone trustworthy and independent helped us find solutions when we were out of our depth technically. We also feel that BP’s formal budgeting approach helped us end the project on speaking terms with our builders. Thanks team.

We opted for Berkeley Place to undertake a substantial renovation of our Grade II Listed home, a decision we’re extremely pleased with. Having previously managed a project ourselves, we encountered challenges in coordinating tradespeople. Often, initial promises devolved into excuses as the project progressed, leaving us uncertain about the truth amidst the exaggerations.

Entrusting the project management and trade selection to a specialized firm proved invaluable. I really can’t say enough positive things about the Berkeley Place team. Nick gave really helpful advice and insight when we first met. The builders appointed – Roksteady Construction led by Jono, and Mikey on site, were incredibly hard working, diligent, considerate and kind including to my neighbours. The quality of the finish has been impeccable and is commented on by everyone who comes to the flat. Lucy kept the whole show on schedule and troubleshot any issues beautifully – I was working outside of Bristol in a very busy job and it was such a relief to have a team I could trust and rely on.

I approached Nick to appraise a property I was enquiring to purchase and renovate. As it was going to be my first development I wanted input from someone who was experienced in this area. Nick was able to give me a full assessment of the possible work that would need to be undertaken, just from a review of the agents’ photographs of the property. He was able to guide me on costs by area of the property too. I was really impressed with Nick’s knowledge – he was really supportive yet warned me of the potential risks of this particular development. It’s rare that you find someone who wants what is best for you and not just after your business. Unfortunately I was unable to negotiate the price down low enough to make the renovation worthwhile and proceed.

Overall, my customer experience with Nick was exceptional. He is generous with his time and explains complex issues in a way that is easy to understand. I really valued his expert opinion on this project.

We appointed Berkeley Place to deliver a complete refurbishment of our Grade II listed apartment in Clifton Park. The construction team were extremely competent, personable and provided considered advice. They were always willing to listen and adapt where necessary.

At the beginning of our project we were out of the county and therefore slightly detached from proceedings however, the refurbishment progressed forwards and was in safe hands. Nick Cryer was quick to develop our ideas from the outset and liaised with the property management company to obtain approval of our proposed changes.

Being a listed period property there were day-to-day challenges but Berkeley Place worked with us: Alex Cross came up with practical solutions to give the end results we demanded and communication was consistently good throughout, as was keeping account of the budget.

The design achieved the brief and provide us with contemporary living in a Grade II listed building – we just love it!

I instructed Nick Cryer of Berkeley Place to project manage the refurbishment and extension of my house in Pembroke Road, Clifton, and from the outset Nick came up with really good ideas on the proposed development, liaised with the Architects, instructed a team of builders and other tradesmen and thereafter supervised the works whilst I was living abroad.

Whenever any problems arose during the development period Nick dealt with them in a very professional manner and found solutions to enable the works to proceed smoothly and with the minimum of delay.

We are the Management Company for a listed grade 2* house in Clifton. Nick and Berkeley Place have worked here twice on the roof area. We found them pleasant and professional with good and relevant experience. They are recommended without reservation.

I was really struggling to get my usual builder to come and sort out some flood damage in our utility room. The place was a mess – literally for months, whilst I waited to try and get something sorted. After several failed promises from others I called Nick in desperation. The job was sorted within a couple of weeks – on time and on budget. They communicated well from the beginning to the end of the project & if there was a problem then they were always readily available either by phone, email or onsite. Being a school health and safety of our staff & pupils is always essential & Berkeley Place always worked with the utmost care and consideration which minimised any disruption involved. They delivered the project on budget and the end product means the school has been restored to its former glory. I wouldn’t hesitate in using them again.

Berkeley Place was recommended to us by a friend as we recently bought a flat which needed renovation, including 2 bathrooms, kitchen, and various windows. It was not possible to carry out the work with us in occupation, and as our main home is in France, we wanted a reliable company to deliver the works to a high standard,and within budget. We would not visit the site until each phase had been completed.

The project has been divided into 4 phases and the first two have been completed with excellent results.

We used Berkeley Place for a substantial project on a grade 2 Georgian country house including extensive refurbishment, decoration, reconditioning 300 year old windows etc.

Professionalism and quality workmanship

I am happy to recommend Nick and Berkeley Place, they were contracted to carry out decorative work at my offices and have refurbished other Savills offices on my recommendation and as a direct result of their professionalism and quality workmanship. On a personal level, I have employed them at my own home and found the contractors punctual, trust worthy and considerate. After only a couple of meetings, I left him the keys of the house. A large old houses with extensive redecorating, so there were snags, and decisions to be taken to keep costs in check. Nick and his team were very efficient, pleasant to work with and always ready with good sensible advice.

Living overseas and having bought a rather run down but a gem of a Georgian Grade 2 listed townhouse, absolute trust and faith in our project manager for the complete renovation that our house needed. In one word Nick and his team at Berkeley Place, “ delivered”.

The whole house, all 5 stories were gutted , front and back gardens redesigned and planners dealt with, all within the confines of very awkward access. The opportunity for conflict with our new neighbours was obvious, but Nick and his various contractors worked with the deftness that would have made a professional PR company proud. At the end of what was a year long project , our next door neighbour told me he missed our contractors, which has to be a first !

The quality of the workmanship, the willingness to go the extra mile, and the professionalism of the financial management of what was a complex project, would all lead me to recommend Nick and his team to anyone with a similar renovation in mind.

Berkeley Place delivered our year-long house renovation project, while we lived in the property. I would have no hesitation in recommending them for any large renovation projects where you need all the strands pulling together to be delivered as a whole. We hired Berkeley Place to help us convert two flats in an Edwardian property back into a single dwelling. In retrospect it was one of the best decisions we could have made in the whole process. Nick and his team helped us source the various contractors to gut the house, renovate and restore it back up to the beautiful home it is today. Berkeley Place managed not only the finances but also the inevitable issues which arose which kept some of the stress levels down. We supported Nick and his co-investors with a strategic and challenging off market transaction. The high profile Grade 2 listed property which comprised over 10,000 sq ft of commercial space, together with scope for further development represented an attractive opportunity for the customer. Whilst the property was in unloved condition, the building was efficiently reorganised and renovated to deliver a sizeable rent uplift via a new tenant and lease arrangement. Latterly the sale of the property provided further investor returns.
