A life-altering operation

For the first time since Ben had pediatric neurosurgery at the ages of four and five, he has been back in the hospital for what his father calls a life-altering operation.

Many of my readers have followed Ben’s progress from the time he was diagnosed as a three-year-old with a vascular abnormality in his brain, through three brain surgeries that ultimately saved his life, through his childhood years, and now to his time in high school.

A little history

I began this blog in 2014 to chronicle Ben’s medical journey. He does not remember anything at all about his health problems as a young child. When he was only 3, he was diagnosed with an arteriovenous fistula (a vascular abnormality) in his brain. It was a life-threatening condition, and he had two brain surgeries at the age of 4 and another surgery the following year, all done by the world-renowned New York doctor, Dr. Alex Berenstein, who developed the procedure for repairing AV fistulas in children.

Ben was declared cured and has grown into a fine young man who excels academically, has played sports since he was five years old, plays percussion in his high school’s marching band, and volunteers in his community.

(Those early posts that explain Ben’s medical condition in more detail can be found by accessing the drop-down menu in the archives at the bottom of this post.)

Fast forward to today

However, Ben faced another operation two weeks ago, this time to lengthen one leg that has not kept pace with the other leg as he has grown. The fistula had been on the left side of his brain, and as he grew, his right leg did not grow as fast as his left leg, leaving it two inches shorter. All of his life he has walked and played sports with a limp that has become more pronounced as he has grown and also has affected his spine.

The surgery was at the same hospital in Atlanta that originally diagnosed Ben when he was only three years old. The surgeon had to break Ben’s right femur because it had a greater curve in it than was normal. A telescopic rod was then inserted into the femur that allows for the lengthening of the bone 1 mm/day for 50 days. Ben will have to be relatively immobile for some time and on crutches (or some sort of assisted walking device) for 4-6 months, and the rod will remain in place for a year.

Ben’s recovery from the surgery itself has been nothing short of amazing. (His first words as he was recovering were that he wanted a chocolate croissant. LOL) His parents had been told that he could be hospitalized for as long as three weeks while he underwent intensive physical therapy at the hospital.

However, he was released to go home within two days and arrived home all smiles and in good spirits.

He now must use a walker and may graduate to crutches but will need some sort of walking assistance for quite a while. Physical therapy is three times a week at a local medical facility. He is in the homebound program at school, and at this time I don’t know when he will be returning to school.

The rod in Ben’s leg is a new device, just approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Manufactured in Germany, it was personally flown to the U.S. by a representative from the manufacturer who was present in the hospital during Ben’s surgery.

An external controller delivers signals/pulses to the rod which then expands. The controller is held against Ben’s hip, and he listens on a stethoscope to make sure he can hear the whirring of the rod inside his leg. Someone also can listen at his knee, which I was able to do.

Here his mom is delivering the pulses to the leg…

A follow-up doctor’s appointment showed that Ben’s leg has already lengthened by nine millimeters.

Please continue to remember Ben and send more healing thoughts and prayers his way.

Thanks to all who have kept Ben in your thoughts and prayers over the years. And a multitude of thanks to Dr. Alex Berenstein at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City who saved Ben’s life.

He’s come a long way!

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that my little grandson, who at the age of 4 had two brain surgeries that saved his life, went from looking like this…

To looking like this today…

Ben is only 12 years old, but he is so tall that he towers over me…

I’ve been blessed to spend a lot of time with him lately. At a recent football game, his middle school concert band was invited to march on the football field with the high school marching band, and I made the trip over to see him on the field. (The middle schoolers all wore orange shirts.)

This past weekend, the concert band had their Christmas performance.

And then there was soccer. Ben’s team won runner-up in the regional tournament, and third place in the state championship. We sat in the cold rain this weekend to watch the state championship matches, and it was a challenge to keep my camera dry, but we had a wonderful time. (Ben is the tall player in the bright orange shoes.)

As always, we are so proud of this young man and so grateful to everyone who has kept Ben in your thoughts and prayers.

Our miracle boy is 12!

Grandson Ben celebrated his 12th birthday this week, and I was so glad I was able to make the trip last weekend to watch him play in a soccer match and to celebrate early with him.

This Spring he chose to play soccer rather than baseball, and I was able to watch him play in one match at least. In the photos, he is the tall player, number 32, with the blue and hot-pink shoes…

It did rain during the match

The following night we went to see a professional soccer match between the Chattanooga Red Wolves and the Northern Colorado Hailstorms, which we all thoroughly enjoyed. I love soccer! Ben posed with the Red Wolves’ mascot…

This weekend, Ben celebrated again, this time with three friends who all went bowling and played laser tag and arcade games together.

Happy birthday, Ben!

As always, many thanks to everyone who has kept Ben in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks, everyone. Ben is fine!

At the beginning of this month I asked for prayers and healing thoughts for my grandson Ben who had tested positive for Covid. We were worried about how the virus might affect him in light of his previous, serious medical issues. I am happy to report that he is fine. And I thank all who kept him your thoughts and prayers.

After what turned out to be only very mild symptoms and after over two weeks of quarantine, he will be returning to school tomorrow. As I noted in my previous post, his school has had very few cases of Covid, and schools in his area have been open since August.

Many thanks to everyone who sent healing thoughts and prayers Ben’s way!

Asking for prayers and healing thoughts

unexpectedincommonhours's avatarUnexpected in common hours

This post today is to ask for prayers for my grandson Ben who tested positive today for Covid. If you are a praying person, please offer up a prayer for Ben. Otherwise, please send some healing thoughts his way.

My long-time readers are familiar with Ben. When he was 3 years old he was diagnosed with an arteriovenous fistula (a vascular abnormality) in his brain. Shortly after his 4th birthday he and his parents flew to New York where he had life-saving surgery. World-renowned surgeon Dr. Alexandro Berenstein performed two operations, one in which platinum coils were placed in Ben’s brain and the other in which medical-grade “super glue” was injected into the affected area to totally stop the abnormal blood flow and close off the fistula. A year later Ben’s life was again in danger, and another surgery was performed, resulting in the Dr. B’s declaration that “Brave Ben”…

Christmas Ornament Making

Grandson Ben is getting ready for Christmas… Check out the other videos on his YouTube channel, too.

We have officially entered the holiday season! Pre 2020, I was a stickler for waiting until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas. But seeing as how 2020 has been a crap year, my family decided to start decorating early.

We love looking at the glow of the lights on the tree, and this year we got a new tree. I have wanted a 9′ tree for some time, and finally found one that I love. So, when we bought it in early November, we went ahead and put it up. It wasn’t long before we had it decorated and Christmas going up all over the house. We were almost completely decorated before Thanksgiving even came. But hey, it’s 2020, and anything goes, apparently!

Most every year, my son makes ornaments for close family. When he was younger, it was always different versions of fingerprint ornaments, but now that he’s 10…

Finally, a Haircut! (Quarantine Photo A Day)

Ben’s mom posted this on her blog. Ben finally got a quarantine haircut!

ktbug512's avatarSweet Peach

The governor of Georgia is beginning to relax the requirements for sheltering in place. Now, while I’m not ready to go out to eat, or sit with 20 other ladies at a nail salon, my husband and son did venture out for much needed hair cuts. They were the only people in the small salon, other than the hairdresser, and the door remained locked during their visit, and other cleaning protocol had taken place.

I had strictly been forbidden to try at home cuts. My husband said we didn’t have the right kind of sheers. I’m really not sure if that was the case, or if we could have made do, but I was not trusted! Lol. Either way, they didn’t happen while at home over the last 6 weeks (I think).

Here’s my little cutie with a fresh cut. The first two are a before and after. On one…

Ben has his own YouTube channel!

Like other kids all around the world, grandson Ben is doing “virtual school” during this time of COVID-19. But when he’s not doing school work or watching TV or spending some time outside, he is enjoying doing science experiments, with help from his dad. His mom has been recording them, and Ben is uploading the videos to his own channel on YouTube.

BenTube

Here’s how he introduces himself in the ‘About” section on his channel…

Hi, I’m Ben! I love all sports, science, and fun games. Come check out my channel! If you love my videos, make sure to click like and subscribe!

So far Ben has uploaded videos of two science experiments: How to make a homemade lava lamp! and How to make fire in a bottle!

Have a look, and if you have a child or grandchild who might be interested in doing these experiments at home or may just want to see how they’re done, let them have a look, too. Ben will be uploading more videos as time goes on.

Thank you, #March For Our Lives!

A sincere “Thank You” and words of encouragement to keep up the fight to all the young people who participated in the #March For Our Lives here in the U.S. and around the world.  You have begun a movement for common-sense gun control laws that will save countless lives.  You are our future. As I watched you all on television and heard the words you spoke, I was filled with an optimism that I have not experienced in a long time.

YOU are making American great again and will make our schools, churches, and public places safer for this little guy…

Because no 7-year-old should have to experience what the kids at Parkland or Sandy Hook or countless other schools have experienced. No 7-year-old should even have to participate in active-shooter drills in elementary school.  It’s insane!
