Joe was conceptualized into being by people who should have been more careful of what they were thinking. A habit of asking questions that were difficult to answer led him into the biological sciences. A desire to make a decent living led him from there into computers, a process he refers to as "Not so much selling out as buying in." An infatuation with dance began with tap lessons at 16, and continues to this day, partially out of a wish to remain a moving target. Despite a lifetime of attempting to cultivate the image of the pallid aesthete, friends persist in not only asking him to help them move but to carry the heavy end of the refrigerator.
