Born on June 2, 1988, in Stony Brook, New York, she was raised in Forest Hills, Queens. Her father, Wally, is Chinese-American, and her mother, Tia, was a South Korean immigrant who passed away when Awkwafina was four years old. She was subsequently raised by her father and his grandparents, with whom she developed a close bond .​

Awkwafina’s career began in the early 2010s when her rap song “My Vag” went viral on YouTube in 2012. She released her debut album, Yellow Ranger, in 2014, and appeared on the MTV comedy series Girl Code from 2014 to 2015 .​

Transitioning to acting, Awkwafina gained recognition with supporting roles in films such as Ocean’s 8 (2018) and Crazy Rich Asians (2018).
