REGULATORY HISTORY OF PFAS

PFAS is a broad term for a group of more than 3,000 fluorinated chemicals that began to see common use in the middle of the 20th century for numerous applications such as non-stick cookware, coatings, paint, fire extinguishing foam, food wrappings, and textile coatings. Despite their effectiveness in industry, PFAS do not break down over time and can bio-accumulate in organisms, with studies indicating that some types display significant toxicity. Concern over long-term health impacts lead to a strong federal push for regulation.

In 2021, the US EPA issued a determination to regulate two types of PFAS – perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) – and deem them hazardous substances. The rulings were finalized in 2024 and drinking water standards were established, bringing with them the first wave of enforcement.
