The upside to living in Southern California is the weather is almost always warm.

The downside, of course, is that eventually the concept of seasons gets hazy. Winter is always mild. Spring becomes summer in an instant, and fall is mostly another rendition of summer, with slightly shorter days.

It’s still in the nineties during the day. Only the gentle chill in the air tells her it’s actually October. She doesn’t need zip up sweater she’s wearing, but she brought it anyway, if only for a place to put her key, her phone, and her wallet. She might be walking alone, but she’s not being stupid about it.

She just needs a break. A break from the quiet in her house, from remembering the last seven months. From thinking about what could’ve been.
