Why check for leaks?
The materials used in flexible ballistic panels are designed to stop bullets. However, their ability to effectively dissipate the energy of an impact can be significantly compromised by exposure to water. Water absorption can lead to efficiency losses of up to 50%. A waterproof cover therefore protects the ballistic materials from water and humidity ingress.
It is essential to ensure that this protection actually is leak-free, both in new panels and those that have already served, to guarantee the effectiveness of the bulletproof vest.
ASC BAIT - Ballistic panel leak test
The ASC BAIT is an integrity test instrument for flexible ballistic panels, used in Quality Control during bullet-proof vest production, batch verification upon receipt, and assessment of reusability in body armor reconditioning and field services.
The ASC BAIT provides fast, objective, and rigorous testing, thanks to our innovative and patented inspection method. It offers the certainty that each panel actually is waterproof, with traceability to prove that each panel was tested.
Test chamber dimensions: 815 x 815 mm.
Test method
The flexible panel is placed in the test chamber, and the operator closes the lid. Closing the lid automatically starts the test. The chamber is gradually put under vacuum, causing the cover to inflate.
A non-intrusive pressure sensor in the lid records the internal pressure inside the flexible pack. Once the desired pressure is reached, the instrument stabilizes it and measures its evolution.
This evolution is compared to an Pass/Fail limit, and the instrument either validates or rejects the tested item based on the measured value.
Major leaks (incomplete sealing, tears, etc.) are detected during the first part of the test, as the pack fails to inflate or does not inflate sufficiently.
