MUSINGS: Carine & Alyssa Discuss Looks from Arashi’s PV “Whenever You Call”

Arashi doll themselves up for their latest PV, Bruno Mars-produced track, “Whenever You Call” with satin, sheen, velvet, and the Johnny’s-standard sparkle. As typical of any Arashi-occasion, AFS members, Carine and Alyssa engage in a discussion of Arashi’s individual and group outfits. You’ll find their global email correspondence below where you’ll find an analysis of the looks from the PV. In this conversation, there are special nods to Hedi Slimane, Domyouji Tsukasa, Kizoku Tantei, Prada, and Arashi’s senpai group V6!

WS3u9-eC

Hello everyone and welcome back! It’s been a while since we did a post and while this is going up a lot later than planned, better late than never right! Our last birthday post for the oldest member of Arashi was back in 2017. I think we all know Ohno Satoshi is a tough subject when related to fashion, but I’m happy to make it back with this post.

SHOPTHELOOK-OHNO.jpg

To celebrate Ohno Satoshi’s birthday, I’ve put together a Shop the Look post featuring this look from the “Don’t you get it” PV. It’s a casual-cool look and definitely one that is easy to recreate! Take a look at my LUXE and BUDGET looks below!

How to Style: Nino’s Mustard Tee

howtostyle_ninomustardtee_header

First of all, happy birthday to our favorite frugal member, Ninomiya Kazunari! He’s another year older and, here at AFS, we are happy to celebrate him by sharing this special How to Style: Nino’s mustard tee.

We all know how significant this tee has been in Nino’s life as we’ve seen him wear it a variety of times. The last time we spotted it was back in 2016 and here at AFS. After discussions with AFS, we speculate the tee is probably already full of holes signifying it has already served its purpose for Ninomiya.

While we know how it looks on Nino, how about if we put a fashun spin on it? You’ll find 3 different looks below. I originally started out without any particular theme/occasion for any of these looks since I personally believe that with tinkering here and there with accessories and shoes, you can wear any outfit to any event without the basis of casual or dressy. However, after picking pieces and putting things together I started coming up with explanations of why I put them together and that’s what you’ll find under each one.

The brands featured are not sponsored and are used for the purpose of this post with my own discretion.

Sakurai Sho x CLOUDY

sakuraisho-cloudy-header

Sakurai Sho is a trendsetter. In his fashion, his work, and most likely in his private time, Sakurai Sho is one to challenge the norm and is not afraid of it. Over the years we have heard different people say Sho has always been ahead of the game in trying new things. Recently Ohno Satoshi said it himself on the SP episode of 8JidaJ (8時だJ, 2018.12.29), Sho was the first to do different things when he was young such as getting color contacts and having a perm. Even here at AFS, we have been strong advocates for Sho and his trendsetter fashion (check out or #TrendsetterSho hashtag on twitter and our Trendsetter Sho post).

In his work, Sho was the first in Johnny & Associates to graduate university despite having his Arashi career and became the first Johnny’s to hold a job as a newscaster. Following in the footsteps of Morita Go of V6, Sho continued to incorporate rap into Arashi’s songs and even started writing his own for Arashi songs to help pave the way for younger groups. When talking about fashion, while people tend to poke fun of his choices (e.g. his jeggings in 2010, his double parka in 2011, his 2 camo shorts in Hawaii in 2014), but fans have taken to a particular brand Sho has been wearing since 2015, CLOUDY.

Styling Arashi: Sakurai Sho in Prada

stylingarashi-sho (1).jpg

First, happy birthday Sho! Second, I decided to write this post after realizing it’s been a very long time since we’ve written one in this corner! Our last was December 2017 for Aiba Masaki’s birthday, but feel free to take a trip down memory lane by scrolling the tag!

To familiarize any new followers, Styling Arashi is where we dress Arashi in whatever we want, whether it’s based on a specific brand, occasion, tv show, we’ve given ourselves free rein to play Stylist for Arashi. We take you through each piece and our reasoning as well. We realize how ridiculous it is to realistically dress in one brand, but this is definitely for fun and games.

Today, I’ll be styling the birthday boy in Prada and I was inspired by Sho’s white tee from his 櫻井有吉アブナイ夜会 Hawaii episode. At one point in this episode, with his back to the camera, Sho allows the cameraman to film as he changes his t-shirt to a classic white tee. This plain white tee is Prada and the sight has stuck with me ever since. How do I know this plain white tee is Prada? The iconic Prada triangle logo is seen through the shirt on his back. It’s extremely faint and if you blink you’ll probably miss it.

Arashi’s Louis Vuitton Costumes at FNS

Arashi_LV_FNS_1

Arashi wore Louis Vuitton for FNS but what does it mean?

In an age where what a celebrity wear matters, and what label they wear matters – what does it mean that Arashi’s stylist chose Louis Vuitton for them? That they wore the high fashion French label in their “Natsu Hayate” performance on FNS got me thinking about the bigger picture of celebrities wearing designer labels and what that could represent. Especially in light of the recent Dolce & Gabbana fiasco with China (you can read about that at Diet Prada). For example, wearing D&G means supporting known racists and bigots, not just in light of recent events, but the label’s Co-creative Director, Stefano Gabbana has a history of racist comments and appalling behaviour on social media. Wearing D&G means supporting and validating their horrendous attitudes and behaviour. So what does it mean to wear Louis Vuitton? Let’s delve a little into what the label represents and what it stands for. And quite possibly, what Arashi want to represent and stand for while wearing the label.

Arashi ni Shiyagare Fashion Review: 2018.11.10

anishi_fashionreview_2017-03-11

Hello! It’s Carine here 🙂 I haven’t done a fashion review in a looonnngggg time, but I felt compelled to do one for this particular Arashi ni Shiyagare episode cause the clothes are SO GOOD! And it got me a little excited about men’s fashion again. What I love about all these looks is that they’re a little off kilter and towards the farshun end of fashion without being over the top. I’m gonna change things up a little bit just for this review because it feels cruel to rank them when the clothes are so good. So what I’ll do is waffle on about each outfit and pick a stand-out “winning” piece from each look. So here we go!

Matsumoto Jun: Work or Personal?

Jun-post

Living the life of an entertainer, you are assigned a designated stylist for everything: your own variety show, an appearance on another variety show, a musical performance, a recorded interview, concerts, etc. They will all require a certain way of dressing. But when you’re in the industry for so long, does the line between your personal clothing and workwear pieces start to overlap? When your job requires you to dress in everyday casual clothing, wouldn’t you feel better dressing yourself than having someone else do it? While I am not totally sure the inner-goings of the fashion stylist’s job in Japan’s entertainment industry, my research has lead to believe in certain situations for Matsumoto Jun, there is a thin line between workwear and personal wear. Now whether his personal wear has been incorporated into his workwear or vice versa, we will never know. We do know pieces overlap and I’ll show you in this post.

Doing research for my In Defense of Matsumoto Jun’s Fashion post earlier this month, I came to the realization that not only does he re-wear a lot of his own pieces while he works when not being filmed for an appearance, pieces you thought were for his TV drama end up being seen on Jun during what one would think is when he is dressed in personal clothing.

Warning: there is a lot of visual under this cut. Since I discovered a lot of overlap, I wasn’t quite sure how to format everything and I formatted the photos as easy as I could. I caption each photo with their occasion and year too, so remember to either hover or click on a photo to view them.

In Defense of Matsumoto Jun’s Fashion

Junfashion.png

We’ve all been there. Been the judges of those paparazzi photos. While of course our first reactions start off as “OH PRIVATE PHOTOS” (because we all know they are rare when it comes to those talents under Johnny’s & Associates) those thoughts start processing other things such as: where is he, what is he doing, who is he with, and of course, most importantly, what is he wearing.

The contents of this post will be just as the title says. It will be an open letter defending Jun’s personal fashion. Let me just cover a few disclaimers before getting started:

Disclaimer 1: Of course, I do not personally know Jun nor the real contents of his closet. I am purely defending the pieces we have seen him wear in public as provided by different media sources and any behind the scenes footage provided by Arashi’s concert DVDs.=

Disclaimer 2: I will not be publishing any of the media-provided photos (aka paparazzi photos) of Jun’s personal outfits out of respect.

Disclaimer 3: There are A LOT of visuals. As expected of a man who loves shopping. It was very hard to keep things condensed. Almost everything you’ll see is a screenshot done by me, everything else is a product of media uploaded to fandom over the years.

Before you settle into this article, now is the time to grab a cup of coffee, tea, or water! Now, take a look through a quick snapshot of Jun’s personal style over the years:
