50 Years of Support!

ANAD (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders) is the leading U.S. non-profit dedicated to providing free, peer-based support for anyone struggling with an eating or body image distress. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we ensure that no one has to navigate the path to recovery alone.

Our History

In 1976, Vivian Meehan—a nurse and mother—found herself in a world without resources for her daughter’s anorexia. Choosing action over despair, she launched a support group in her Highland Park basement. What began as a local lifeline has grown into a national movement.

For five decades, ANAD has been shaped by pioneers like Dr. Pat Santucci. A founding member of the Academy for Eating Disorders, Dr. Santucci has spent her career training health professionals and testifying before Congress to advocate for better care. Today, she continues to guide our mission as a valued board member.

Our Impact Today

From a single basement meeting to a nationwide digital network, ANAD now serves more than 300 individuals every week. Our services have evolved to meet modern needs, including:

  • 18 Virtual Support Groups for accessible, real-time connection.

  • National Helpline providing immediate guidance and resources.

  • Peer Mentorship & Student Ambassador Programs fostering recovery and awareness across the country.

Our work is powered by a diverse staff, dedicated donors, and a network of volunteers who truly “get it” because they’ve been there themselves.
