So the year 2007 is over and my venture to read 50 books and watch 100 movies was far from successful. Oh well, I think I made my goals too difficult so for next year they will be less of a reach, but im still happy with what I did and I never watched or read anything for the purpose of this list, so I didnt compromise my high cultural standard...

Its been quite a while since a post...however when im moved with some thought I seem to always come back here to write it down...after reading the sticker on the front of "You Forgot it in People" by Broken Social Scene it made me realize that is probably my favorite collection of songs ever listened to by myself, and probably will not be knocked down by anyone (Not even Sufjan).

The first song I ever heard off of this album was "Anthems of a Seventeen Year Old Girl". My favorite, hmmmmmm, the honest answer would be all of them, however Shampoo Suicide is so rich with emotion that I think that will always be my favorite song.

I remember watching the movie Half Nelson and hearing Shampoo Suicide played at the pivotal moment in that movie. (a note of explanation below on why this statement is important)

I always try not to listen to Sia's Breathe Me (although I havent been very successful in that), because of its emotional impact of hearing it on the season finale of Six Feet Under, and being utterly astounded. I feel like if I listen to that song too much, the next time I watch the finale it wont have the same emotional impact that it has in the past (twice actually, both times brought me to tears, and by tears I mean sobs).

However when I watched the scene in Half Nelson and heard "Shampoo Suicide" (a song i've listened to 87 times according to my itunes) it made such an emotional impact on me, because it was that song, my favorite song. I think Broken Social Scene is a great band, but I also think that they've already made their greatest album, and there is no going up from that. Its not at all an insult, if anything its the greatest praise I can give as a music listener.

This possibly might give some insight to how crazy I am...

This week is the first week since May 27th that the top artist on my last.fm hasnt been Sufjan Stevens. I just noticed today that it was My Brightest Diamond followed by Sufjan Stevens...I am surely crazy...im probably going to get sick of his music soon, but I thought that would happen a couple of months ago, but no...not sick yet!

So im creating this post for two reasons. One I wanted to ruminate on the fantastic music created by My Brightest Diamond, and secondly I just wanted to get some thoughts out there so that is what I will do. I think they both hardly belong in the same post, but why not, I thought them both in the same day and felt they were both appropriate to write about so I shall...

First Order of Bussiness, My Brightest Diamond! This is a band created by Shara Worden. For those who may not know Shara Worden has sung on almost every (if not every) cd Sufjan Stevens has created. She was also the head cheerleader when Sufjan Stevens toured with the Illinoisemakers. She is also on Sufjan Steven's label, Asthmatic Kitty...so yes she is very connected to Sufjan Stevens, it is no wonder that she drew some intrest from me. However, I hadnt really listened much to her prior to putting on the good 'ole last.fm radio, where I first discovered Sufjan himself. A song came up by My Brightest Diamond entitled "Something of an End" and it happened to be a free mp3 provided by last.fm, which was cool. I would say that I wasnt immediately drawn to the song or the sound, but I gave it a try due to the connections to Sufjan. As I listened to the song more and more I really ended up liking it. So about two or three months ago I decided to order a couple of cds offline, and decided I should try out My Brightest Diamond. I dont usually do this, because I dont have that much money to just throw around at a whim, but I figured why not. I got both Feist's and St. Vincent's cd a week before the My Brightest Diamond cd. And so I tried them out. I didnt fall in love with Feist or St. Vincent's immediately but I grew fond with them the more I listened. When I got My Brightest Diamond's cd, I immediately fell in love. I dont know, it is just wonderful. Her voice is impecable, in fact I think other artists should find a way to cut her vocal cords (please dont though!), because she puts other artists to shame. It is just pure rare talent, and it makes me wonder why people on American Idol sell so many albums and are considered so "talented" when there voice isn't even half as good as Shara Worden's, plus Shara plays guitar and writes her songs. I dont know its just an amazing cd. And its funny, my favorite song off of the cd currently, used to be one that I didnt like on the cd. I decided to post a youtube video of her, and I was originally going to put the song on there that is my favorite (Magic Rabbit), however I feared the same reaction I immediately had to it, so im going to play a video of her playing "Golden Star" in Wordsmiths book store. The audience is uncomfortably quite as Shara jams out on the guitar, but I think it is just beautiful...so here it is:

The second thing I wanted to talk about was September 11th. I woke up this morning and just felt uncomfortable. I knew today would be like any other day and that just bothered me, because I dont think it should be. It happened only six years ago, yet people dont care and they have completely forgotten. And what is worse is that people still use September 11th, and the people that died to futher their agendas or opinions, yet they dont stop to acknowledge that today is a pretty important day. But it isnt about government corruption or the war, its about the people who died or were affected. I do feel like America is fortunate to have just this one attack in such a long time, because many countries see attacks like September 11th every day. However, I think we owe it to the people who died or were affected, to atleast acknowledge it happened today, and honestly think about it. I am trying to do the same, and I hope others will too.

Yes I know these two subjects are inappropriate to be put together in the same post, so I apologize.

Its amazing how something so simple as being able to watch Stephen Colbert in economics can make your day...

So I got my Feist and St. Vincent cd's today!! It made today much much better. Although today was better than I expected it to be...its going to be a long year.

On a separate note I saw Superbad with Morgan and Jackson on Sunday and I really really enjoyed it! Its probably the best movie i've seen in the theaters for a while, I never found myself drifting...
