Our Projects

Recycling Plant

ABTC’s lithium-ion battery recycling plant is located at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC) in Nevada. The 137,000 square foot recycling plant is designed to function with high yields and low emissions and will have the capacity to process an initial production scale of 20,000 MT of battery feedstock material per year.

This plant enables the expansion of our in-house developed recycling technologies with application in a commercial-scale facility. A project led by a team of experts in their respective fields, the plant will be the first commercial demonstration of our closed-loop battery recycling process, separating and recovering critical materials from end-of-life batteries and purifying the products to meet battery-grade material specifications.

USABC Demonstration

USABC Demonstration

American Battery Technology Company received a $2 million contract award from the United States Advanced Battery Consortium LLC, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, for the commercial demonstration of its integrated lithium-ion battery recycling system and production of battery cathode grade metal products, the synthesis of high energy density active cathode material from these recycled battery metals by cathode producer and lithium-ion battery recycler BASF, and then the fabrication of large format automotive battery cells from these recycled materials and the testing of these cells against otherwise identical cells made from virgin sourced metals by cell technology developer C4V.

Tonopah Flats

For the past few years, ABTC has been designing and optimizing its internally developed processing train for the manufacturing of battery cathode grade lithium hydroxide from Nevada-based sedimentary claystone resources. ABTC has already successfully demonstrated its internally-developed technologies and manufactured battery-grade lithium hydroxide at its multi-tonne per day pilot demonstration plant from claystone collected from its Tonopah Flats Lithium resource site. This success serves as the foundation for the development of a commercial-scale lithium hydroxide refinery, which is designed to manufacture 30,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide annually.

UNR Partnership

UNR Partnership

American Battery Technology Company is proud to partner with the University of Nevada Reno’s Nevada Center for Applied Research (NCAR) and locate its research and development on campus. NCAR provides industry and entrepreneurs with access to the University’s advanced facilities, equipment, and expertise. In the case of ABTC, the partnership is poised to advance battery metal extraction technologies from Nevada-based primary resources and technologies for the recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

Circularity Challenge

In 2019, BASF, one of the largest cathode manufacturers in North America, hosted a global competition in partnership with Greentown Labs to identify the most promising lithium-ion battery recycling technologies in the world. Among 100 applications from 20 different countries, ABTC was selected as sole winner of the Battery Recycling Circularity Challenge. The Circularity Challenge intends to advance innovative ideas to disrupt the plastics, energy storage, and recycling value chains to enable a circular economy.

As part of this opportunity, ABTC occupies wet chemistry laboratory space, free of charge, from Greentown Labs, which is the largest clean technology incubator in North America.
