Hedera Hashgraph is a type of distributed ledger technology, but it’s not a blockchain in the traditional sense. Hedera distributes transactions in something called a hashgraph rather than organizing data into sequential blocks . This facilitates operation of the transactions in parallel as opposed to one-by-one in a chain. As a result, much-reduced throughput and accelerated consensus. Hedera is designed to make those specific goals — a decentralized, tamper-proof ledger — but based on a different data structure and consensus algorithm than that used by a typical blockchain. For users and developers, it means you get the advantages of a Blockchain (security, decentralization) with improved performance. So although you’ll hear Hedera compared with blockchains often, it’s technically another DLT architecture.
aBFT is short for asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance. It is a property of Hedera’s consensus algorithm that can guarantee that the network is going to come to an agreement on the transactions even though some nodes are corrupt or trying to attack the system, and it does not do that by assuming a fixed time to hear the messages.
In other words, aBFT is one of the most secure types of a distributed network – that shows for finalizing transactions a 100% finality (you can never reverse them) if less than 1/3 of nodes are malicious. Other networks have weaker security models or assume synchrony (synchronous BFT). Hedera’s aBFT is reached via hashgraph gossip and a virtual voting method, meaning that no leader or fixed round time is needed. This is important because it provides confidence that transactions in Hedera are rock-solid confirmed, and it provides resilience to the network. Hedera can still finalize transactions without forking under attack conditions, or internet delays. There are a couple ways you can participate in Hedera HBAR, depending on your interests:
- As a Token Holder: A simple way to participate is to purchase HBAR (from an exchange) and become a holder of HBAR. Once you acquire HBAR, you can use it in the network — pay for transactions, use dApps, or simply hold it as an investment in Hedera’s ecosystem.
- Staking: Users who own HBAR can stake their tokens in exchange for helping the network ; secure and rewarded for it. You stake by selecting a Hedera node (for the moment, one of the council members’ nodes) and associating your own account with it for staking. This is usually done in your wallet (for instance, hashing wallet has also a staking tab, where you can select a node). You’ll receive periodic HBAR rewards deposited into your account by staking.
- Utilizing DApps: You can get involved by using all the different decentralized apps on Hedera. In the future, with Hedera’s ongoing transition to permissionless nodes, tech-savvy community members will have opportunities to run consensus nodes and directly participate in the transaction validation process.
- Development: If you are a developer, you can engage in development on Hedera, could be a hobby of yours or full start up attempt. You are very welcome to the builders, and you can build ships, codes, smart contracts, and tools. - Governance Discussions: The council votes on the major decisions, however, the Hedera community and Hedera Improvement Proposal (HIP) process is open to everyone whom wants to contribute.
Yes, Hedera Hashgraph is built around the idea of being very secure. Security is provided at several layers:
Consensus Security: As previously mentioned, Hedera’s aBFT consensus provides fault tolerance guarantees based on mathematical proofs for a fixed number of faulty or malicious nodes. This ensures that the ledger (ordering of transactions) remains secure, irrespective of attack. There’s not a mining race, and you can’t do a “51% attack” against Hedera the same as you can a proof-of-work chain. And since finality is fast and there is no forking, the confirmation of transactions is irreversible.
Governing Council Oversight: The network nodes are operated by trusted, known organizations on the council. These members have reputations to protect and maintain enterprise-grade infrastructure. That lowers the risk of a bunch of random anonymous parties running many nodes and colluding (known as Sybil-attacks often). Eventually, Hedera will move to a more decentralized model but, for now, the current arrangement means that the quality of the node operators enhances security. Council members also collectively control changes to the network, which minimizes the potential for any one party to commit any malfeasance an inherent system of checks and balances.
Cryptography: Hedera utilizes robust contemporary cryptographic primitives. Each transaction is signed with the user’s private key (Ed25519 signature), and if it is not signed correctly, it will not be executed. The hashgraph itself is structured in such a way that cryptographic hashes are used to ensure data integrity (hence, the name hashgraph). All communications between nodes are authenticated. The bottom line is all the regular blockchain/DLT security principles apply.
No Smart Contract Vulnerability (for basic operations): Regarding security advantage on Hedera, some of the operations (like token transfer, NFT mints via HTS) do not necessarily need to write a custom smart contract code, they are being done by the native network services. For those operations, this removes any risks of smart contract bugs. (If you use Hedera’s Smart Contract service, then like any Ethereum contract, you need to ensure your contract code is secure and audited, of course.
Bottom line, Hedera is secure by design (aBFT Hashgraph) and by governance structure. No system has 100% no introduction, however, Hedera provides a multitude of safeguard that makes it one of the more secure DLTs.
