BIOGRAPHY

I am fascinated by the power of an absorbing story to transport the reader into a completely different time, season and circumstance. It's an exhilerating ride, with the author providing the magic carpet, That is what I try to do in my work.

I, Ditta Sylvester, was born, educated and taught school in Jamaica before migrating to America. My characters--their strengths, weaknesses and idiosyncrasies-- emerge from people I grew up with.

I have written three book, all of which are available on Amazon.com. My home is in Jacksonville, Fl.

    • Hi there, I always find it enriching to hear from fellow authors. Personally, my writing journey started with a deep fascination for 1920s Berlin. It led me to create Gereon Rath and the world around him. What inspired you to start writing?

      • I'm not sure I was inspired by anything in particular. I was born loving words and literature, and was almost always at the top in my English class. Writing came as easily as reading and people liked my essays and whatever else I wrote so I just wrote! My stories emerge from my own (Jamaican) experiences but I am trying to get familiar with American and other cultures.
Thanks for asking. All the best!

          • Thank you for sharing more about your journey. It’s beautiful to hear how a natural love of words and storytelling has guided you all along. Drawing from your Jamaican roots while exploring other cultures adds such valuable richness to your work.

And Shameful Shadows, what a powerful inspiration. Writing about something as profound as the HIV/AIDS outbreak takes courage and heart.

            • I just returned and wanted to say, your book cover is striking. It’s beautifully designed and truly stands out. Did you create it yourself or work with a designer? Either way, it’s very well done

                • That’s fantastic! Self-publishing on KDP is such a powerful way to bring your stories directly to readers, you must feel a great sense of accomplishment.

As for me, I write historical crime fiction, mostly set in the turbulent years of the Weimar Republic in Germany. I love weaving real history with fictional mysteries, trying to capture the mood and complexity of that era.

What genre or style do you enjoy writing most?

                    • That sounds like a rich and heartfelt mix. Real-life experiences bring authenticity, while romance and coming-of-age add warmth and emotional depth.

Do you find one genre pulls you more strongly than the others, or do you enjoy weaving between them depending on the story’s mood?

                      • Also, I hope you don’t mind me asking, but I noticed the book has a lower rating on Amazon than expected. Have you received feedback about that? I ask out of genuine interest, as I believe your work deserves more recognition.

                          • A few years back, I faced challenges with marketing my books, until I partnered with an exceptional marketing specialist who completely changed the game for me. Since then, my book sales have soared, I’ve gained thousands of reviews, and even reached bestseller status, all thanks to her strategic and affordable services. She skillfully identified my target audience, increased my book’s visibility, and was instrumental in getting my titles placed in bookstores and subscription boxes. Because of her expertise, my author brand is now stronger than ever.

      • Hi Raven, (love that name!)

It terms of rewards, the reviews and awards I earned form my short stories have been very fulfilling. My most recent work, "The Wrong Girl and Stephen's mother", I consider my best. I have spent so much time sharpening and renewing those characters that I love them like real people! There is not much else else that I wrote which I still get a thrill out of rereading.
The financial rewards have not been great but I hope that, in time, that will change for the better.

All the best and do stay in touch.

        Ditta
