#7 All Time Favorite Post- Jar Of Life

Revisited…

A professor stood before his Philosophy class and had some items in front of him on the table.

When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty glass jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks that were about 2″ in diameter.

He then asked his students if the jar were full. They all agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar were full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar were full. The students responded with an unanimous “yes.”

The professor then put out two take away cups of coffee from under the table and poured both into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.”

“The rocks are the important things – your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions – things that if everything else were lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.”

“The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else – the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks.”

“It is very important to put all the larger stones in the jar first, so that we will be able to fit all of them later.

“The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.”

“Take care of the rocks first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised his hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled. “I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a cup of coffee with a friend.”

So then we ask ourselves what are the large stones in our life? Our Health? Family? Friends? Our Goals?Things we love to Do like  writing, blogging or fighting for a Cause? Taking Time for Ourself?

What we must remember is that it is most important to include the larger stones in our lives, because if we don’t do so, we are likely to miss out on life altogether. If we give priority to the smaller things in life (pebbles & sand), our lives will be filled up with less important things, leaving little or no time for the things in our lives that are most important to us. If we spend all our time and energy on the small stuff, we will never have room for the things that are important to us. Pay attention to the things that are critical to our happiness. Let’s play with our children. Take our partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.

Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

Because of this, never forget to ask yourself,

“What are the Large Stones in my Life?”

And once you identify them, be sure to put them first in your

“Jar of Life”.
