Vicky’s review of Netherworld~ Hollowed Realms pt 1

about the book blue swirls

Taryn
Flatline. The moment when one life ends and the next begins. That’s my cue. Being a banshee is a right pain in the arse. When I’m not ferrying souls through the veil between worlds, I’m training in secret for a war our King denies is coming. But I know better. An army of Lorcan monsters stands ready to breach the wall. If they succeed, the destruction they seek will not be contained. My only hope is to rely on the aid of a cocky prince with his own agenda. But after a human man captures my interest, will I be able to accept the terms of the prince’s aid?

Devlin
Our paths were never meant to cross. I’m meant to live my human life, unaware of the world that exists beyond the veil. But when Taryn and I collide, my world flips upside down. Nothing makes sense anymore. Logic tells me to run as far as I can from Taryn and the nightmares of her world but my heart screams at me to follow her to the literal ends of the earth. Even if it means my own damnation.

five star rating

I was excited to read this one as I have never read about a Banshee before. I found the synopsis intriguing and the story was excellent. When Taryn is tasked with her daily job, things quickly go wrong. And when you think things can’t get any worse for her… They do. I really liked the characters and not only are we given one book boyfriend to lust after we are given TWO!! Oh my.. On one hand we have Devlin.. and the other Prince Aed. But with everything going on, it is hard to know just how things will play out. The story moved at a steady pace, and at the end we find Taryn in a precarious situation and i am anxious to see what happens next. This series is definitely one I would be absolutely thrilled to see come to life on the big screen. I cannot wait for more of the Hollowed Realm, and what lies within…

Vicky’s review of Every October by Aubree Lane

Every OctoberEvery October by Aubree Lane

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This shorter read was filled with life lessons and the struggle of leaving those we love behind… no matter where we are headed. Every October Zoey comes to see her daughter, and Amy can sense when her mom is near. But this year she can actually see her! It’s heartbreaking to see the love she has for her little girl. But it’s not all doom and gloom there is definitely some lighter moments and things Zoey will have to figure out before she can move on. Will she be stuck on this path forever? Or will she discover a way to move past everything and go where she belongs? Well I can’t tell you…. you will have to read for yourself 🙂

Vicky’s Review of Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After reading the Court series I just had to read more by Sarah. The synopsis drew me in and once the story took off, and I could not put it down. Celaena is definitely going to be an interesting character, and I feel there is a lot more to her than what we see here. After all this is just the beginning right? The story moved at a great pace and had just enough mystery and suspense to keep the pages flipping. With so many different characters throughout the story, I often found myself wondering about their backstories, but also wondered who was friend or foe? I am excited to dive deeper into this series and cannot wait to see what happens next.

That is until Caleb Matthews sweeps her off her feet with his genuine, sincere, no-nonsense way. Over time, she allows him to break down her walls of mistrust. She learns how to make allowances for people that may be flawed, and not always entirely honest.  But is that wise?

Whatever you imagine the end will be may be a bit of truth, but you won’t see the twist until it’s too late.

deception excerpt

The middle of three children, Izzy had two brothers. Her older brother by three years, Michael, was wonderful. He was trustworthy, loving and kind. He always stuck up for and protected her. They were very close.

Then there was Gabriel, her younger brother by two years. The last time there was a relationship this loving, God threw Lucifer out of heaven.

Malicious and vindictive, Gabriel was a liar. Izzy had caught him in many lies, but whenever she tried to tell their mother he was lying, Shelly always brushed her aside and let it go. It infuriated Izzy. At times like that, Gabriel taunted her with smug looks and snide comments. She could never see them being friends. Ever.

Hugo, the Greenblat Great Dane, was as gentle as a kitten and as big as a small horse. Some of the neighbor kids called him Huge-O due to his size. Izzy had always loved dogs because they never lied, were always loyal and faithful.

She thought life was perfect. She soon learned a perfect life was just an illusion. All made up of smoke and mirrors. Reality shattered her happy existence.

The lie that destroyed Izzy’s ten-year-old world came when her parents announced they were ending their relationship, but not by divorce. They had never married.

Her brothers accepted it. She couldn’t. She was devastated that two people she should have been able to trust, had lied to her throughout her life. She had too many questions. What did it mean? How would they be treated? Did this mean she and her brothers were bastards? Her biggest question was if her parents were splitting, would one of them take Gabriel with them? The questions kept coming with no one answering them.

Izzy decided then she would never trust anyone but Michael again.

excerpt fh

He paid the man and gave his little girl the treat, then walked her over to a bench.

She was busy working on the wrapper; as intent on it as a bomb expert trying to un-wrap a potentially highly explosive package.

Mark said, “Honey, wanna play a game with daddy?”

She looked up, one eye still intent on her ice-cream bar. “Sure! What kind of game?”

He smiled down to her and ruffled her hair, mussing it up a bit, “Hide and seek.”

About the author fh

Steve Soderquist started writing when he was seventeen. He left that to become a successful musician, spending many years on the road with numerous bands. He came off the road to have a ‘normal life’, but found the writing bug hadn’t left him.

He wrote a novella One for the Road and knew he had to keep going. There was so much he felt compelled to put on paper. Steve went on to pen the horror novel Farm House, When it was complete and those blessed two words ‘THE END’ were put down, he knew he’d come full circle and found his calling. Farm House had originally been publishing it with a company that has since closed their doors.

Steve’s always been an avid reader with an eclectic mix of favorite authors: Stephen King, V.C. Andrews, Jules Verne, J.R.R. Tolkien, James Clavell…so many. It’s his belief reading different genres, has enriched him as an author.

Now, as a full-time published author, Steve’s not through with some of the characters he introduced in his first two books. In addition to his first two works, he’s completed and released Seeds, co-authoredRogue and has just finished Jessica, due out by year end. He has numerous other books at various stages of completion. Although he is a master at horror/thriller, he will tell you he doesn’t write genres, he writes books.

This year he became the co-owner of Foundations, LLC publishing company. As an author, he saw the need in the publishing world to help author’s learn how to promote and sell their work. Instead of complaining about it, he’s doing something about it. It’s because of this, he’s seeing his dilegent efforts pay off in the success of his company, proving there was a great need out there for authors to have a publisher show them the ropes.

Excerpt

“Sebby?” I called out, hesitantly walking through the entryway and into the open living space.

“Holy shit!” I exclaimed when my eyes settled on him standing in front of his refrigerator. But that wasn’t what caught me completely off-guard. It was the fact that he was standing there, holding a towel in his hand, exposing himself in all his glory. I quickly spun around, my entire face turning a shade of red that would put my hair color to shame.

“Fuck!” he shouted. “Do you take the world’s quickest shower or something?!”

“Balls,” I muttered, keeping my eyes glued to a large print of a vintage DC-10 that was hanging on the entryway wall.

“What?” he countered, his voice turning light and amused. I could almost picture that sexy and adorable smile drawn on those kissable lips of his.

“There were balls. And stuff.”

He laughed harder than I had heard him laugh in the few weeks I had known him, the rumble echoing in the open space.

“I’ll never be able to look at you again without seeing your balls, Sebby. Just thought you should know that.” I drew a long breath, trying to settle my nerves. Seeing his mouth-watering body completely bare didn’t help matters any. “Here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to go back to my apartment. I’m going to have a shot of whiskey. Or tequila. Or gin. Or whatever will make my blood pressure drop. And then I’m going to come back and we’ll try this again, okay?”

“I promise I’ll be dressed when you come back.”

“Why were you bare ass naked in your kitchen anyway? Did you want me to walk in on you like that? Trying to show off?”

“Do you think I have something to show off?”

“I… Well…” I shook it off. “I’m not answering that.”

“Okay then.”

“Okay.”

“Baylee…?”

“Yes?” I turned around as one often does when their name is called.

“Jesus!” His expression grew wide and he hastily attempted to hide himself.

“For fuck’s sake!” I spun back and faced the door once more. “Did you not think to cover yourself up after the first time I walked in and saw you naked? I’m still standing here. You know that bath towels serve some rather astonishing purposes these days, the most useful of which being something to wrap around your waist to keep your junk covered! I’m leaving and taking two shots of whiskey. Be back in five minutes.”

Vicky’s Review
Loved, loved, loved it! I know I probably say this about all of T.K.’s books but I think this was my favoritest one yet! The chemistry between Baylee and Sebby is instant from the moment they meet. I loved this lighter side of this read and my sides still hurt from all the laughing I did through-out. Baylee needing to move on after some drama in her life takes off on an adventure and it was interesting to see where her journey takes her. I loved getting to see bits and pieces of her mother through her journal, it gave the story an element that needed to be there. We meet some interesting characters, and some not so savory ones. There is lots of fun to be had while reading it and there were a few times it gave me goosebumps as I was reading. The anticipation I had in waiting for this one definitely payed off. I hope to see more of these types of stories from her. And oh the men she dreams up has me confused as to who I should love more. Did I say I loved it? Great read, well written and moved at a great pace. It was inspiring at times and others it will make you want to throw your kindle- so make sure you have a good protective case 😉 . I can’t say anything more with out spoiling it for you, so you will just have to read it to find out why I enjoyed it so much!
