Hello, Yuletide Writer! Thank you so much in advance, and allow me to (hopefully, maybe) give you some ideas about what I'd love to see in a Yuletide story.

Yuletide reveals!
It's that time! This year I wrote:
The Victory Is
Southland, 1,919 words, genfic featuring Lydia and Chickie.
All of the Southland fic I've ever seen has been about John and Ben. This is understandable, since they're awesome, but it meant I was all the more pleased to get a prompt for the ladies. And there was already a fabulous John/Ben story written this year, so it balanced out nicely.
My gifts are all amazing this year! I got three, I'm so ecstatic. What have I done to deserve this, oh gods of Yuletide?
Are You There, God? It's Me, Little Rock by Sarah T. Zombieland, gen.
This is a wonderful piece about Little Rock that I have wanted so badly since I saw the movie. Really, it couldn't be more perfect.
My Yuletide Madness gift fic was Always Quite Contrary by misura. Oglaf, Sandoval the Xoan Ambassador/Ivan the Apprentice.
If you haven't read the webcomic Oglaf, definitely check it out. It's probably not to everyone's taste, but I love it. One of my requests this year was Sandoval/Ivan slash, and this hilarious little ficlet was a great treat.
And my amazing treat fic was Rainbows in the High Desert Air by mjules.
TJ and Amal! I'd guessed this was written by my ungirlfriend
mjules because I know my lovely's writing style. ;) Holy crap, you guys, this fic is so perfect. If you haven't read The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, do it now. Then read this fic, because it's like a slice of canon. Delicious, delicious canon.

Yuletide Letter 2010
Hello, oh magical Yuletide writer! You are automatically amazing for having offered these fandoms, so don't worry that I won't like what you write. But for your further prompting assistance, I present to you:
( My fandoms: The Sandlot, Oglaf, TJ and Amal, and Zombieland.Collapse )
And most important of all, thank you a million times. I love you already.

Yuletide 2009
Oh hey, author reveals are a go. This is what I done did write:
Raising Sand
Generation Kill, Ray/Brad friendship
If this is some scheme to get me wasted and drag me into some Britney Spears chapel to get married, I'll leave your ass in a back alley in Mexico.
I was so nervous when I got this assignment. Not only had I not written Gen Kill before, Ray and Brad are an intimidating undertaking. Little did I know that Ray's voice would come to me more easily than Brad's, which is, frankly, a little disturbing. XD I like how this turned out.
Arabesque
Beauty and the Beast
If it weren't for the fact that she could see between the open spaces in the gleaming iron pieces of the Machine's chest cavity, she would swear there was a heart beating there.
I have no idea what this is beyond an urge to write steampunk!B&B after seeing a pinch hit prompt for a retelling in any style the author chose. It's a little odd, but I still like it.
And my gift was:
The Green Prawn
District 9, Wikus van de Merwe
Snapshots from the life of a former human being.
This is so awesome, I absolutely love it. I can't say too much without spoiling the ending of the movie, but it's exactly what I wanted. Thank you so much to my wonderful author! <3

Dear Yuletide Goat
Hi, my name is Jenna and I’m a Yuletide virgin. :D I’ve observed the phenomenon from afar in the past but never participated, so I’m quite excited to be in the club this year. And nervous. But mostly excited.
Thank you so much for offering to write in any of these fandoms; you’re a brave soul. To be honest, dear writer, I’m kind of easy to please. If you love your story even a little bit, I’ll probably love it a lot.
( Fandoms behind the cut are Karin Lowachee’s Warchild series, Gankutsuou, and District 9. Some spoilers for the first two, heavy ones for District 9.Collapse )

KMF 2009!
So, I've been back for a couple of days but haven't felt like blogging about the Korean Music Festival. Definitely not for lack of enthusiasm about it, just a general sort of laziness. It was so awesome, I want to go every single year. I will plan everything else around it.

Korean Movies, Part Deux
I've been a little absent from LJ for the last couple of days, but I've been watching more Korean movies. I don't know if anyone reading this is actually interested in them, so I'll put my short ramblings behind a cut.
( Oldboy, The Harmonium in My Memory, I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay, Memories of Murder, Joint Security AreaCollapse )
( Oldboy, The Harmonium in My Memory, I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay, Memories of Murder, Joint Security AreaCollapse )
Then you'd go off to a faraway place and live as if you were dead.
Sister and I watched a Korean movie last night called "Rough Cut." Short and inadequate summary: an actor with anger issues sends his costar to the hospital and no other actor will agree to work with him. In order to make the gangster film, he ends up asking a real gangster to co-star in it, who agrees on the condition that all of the fist-fights in the movie must be real.
It's surprisingly believable and surprisingly poignant. I thought it was excellent, except for the last three minutes or so, which left me a little cold. (The ending actually seemed more realistic to me in terms of real life, but less so in terms of how the story was set up.) So I went looking for other opinions.
I couldn't find many, but I did find Korean Film.org, which reviews quite a few of what it calls the "most talked about" Korean films of each year. I like the review styles, which are informative and mostly intelligent and attempt to speak to regular audiences instead of serious film critics. I've already written down five recommendations to check out, and I've only read through a couple of years.
Out of curiosity, I read their review of "No Regrets," which is a beautifully made movie about an orphaned eighteen-year-old forced to work in a gay "host club" who falls in love with a businessman. The most interesting element of the story to me, even over its dealings with being gay in South Korea, was its examination of class differences.
I've been a little mood swing-y lately, which might partially explain why I got choked up reading the last sentence of the review: ( very slight spoiler for the end of the movie.Collapse )
I highly recommend "No Regrets." It's gorgeous and heart-breaking, but surprisingly hopeful. Melodramatic at times, but without the usual "gay relationships must always suffer tragic endings" trope that Asian cinema has been so fond of in years past.
I decided to make a list of some more of my Korean movie recommendations in case anyone is interested. I might do one for Japanese movies later, but Korea is a better place to start if you're fairly new to Asian films. It tends to be more "Hollywood" (in the good ways). If anything looks interesting, Netflix it, find a torrent, or check out
jdramas.

Fic: "At the Beginning" - Nightrunner
Fic: "Heatstroke" - Beach Boys
No, not the band, the show I screencapped the other day. So only about three people are ever likely to read this, but I'll post it here, anyway.
Everyone should download "Beach Boys!"
Title: Heatstroke (What a misleadingly porny title...)
Pairing: Kaito/Hiromi (well, duh)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1,767
Summary: Kaito finally starts to notice Hiromi, but in a completely unexpected way.
( Surprisingly, it wasn't until that trip to Tokyo in the middle of August that Kaito started wondering if the ocean air had been wreaking some serious havoc on his sanity.Collapse )

Forever your love, forever your friend...
"Beach Boys" is a drama that aired in the summer of 1997. It's about two young guys who meet each other when they decide to take a vacation at a little family-run inn (a minshuku) by the ocean. One (Hiromi) is like a big, cheerful puppy and the other (Kaito) is an elite businessman who doesn't know how to relax. They end up befriending the owner of the inn and his seventeen-year-old granddaughter, Makoto. Over the course of the series, Kaito learns to relax while spending time with Hiromi and Makoto, and various conflicts occur as he tries to reconcile his life in Tokyo with his desire to stay at the inn.
It's hilarious and adorable and the two main guys are extremely hot. Also, it's the slashiest show I've ever seen. It's to the point where the only things that fanfic would be able to add are actual confessions of love and, of course, sex. I've only seen the first three episodes of twelve, and I already feel the need to screencap.
( I might have taken too many of these.Collapse )
*happy sigh*
Can this show just never end?

Fic: Plague drabbles
Yay, I finished them! I'll still take prompts, if anyone's interested, but here are the ones I've gotten so far.
ETA: I forgot to mention that both the drabbles and the comments contain huge spoilers for the Bartimaeus trilogy. FYI. Not that anyone reading this probably cares, since I've failed to push books on most of you, but I thought I'd provide fair warning anyway.
( Locusts, Honeydew Syndrome, Josh/MetisCollapse )
( Darkness, Metanoia, Star/ZanCollapse )
( River of Blood, the Bartimaeus trilogy, Bartimaeus/PtolemyCollapse )
( Frogs, the Bartimaeus trilogy, Bartimaeus/NathanielCollapse )
( Darkness, The God Eaters, Kieran/AshCollapse )
***
Hooray for obscure fandoms!

Fic: "Catch You When You Fall" - Honeydew Syndrome
Fic: "Words Are Just Hollow Birds" - Honeydew Syndrome
Well, I have another offering of fanfic, which for some inexplicable reason is for Honeydew Syndrome. I can never tell if my own fics are good or bad, but Melissa likes it, anyway. :X
Title: Words Are Just Hollow Birds (Wow, I'm crap at titles, and this one's from a Panic song. I don't even like Panic except for those recent B-sides. Ahem.)
Pairing: Josh/Metis
Rating: PG (PG-13 for swearing?)
Word Count: 1,371
Summary: Metis didn't believe it would actually happen. Josh/Metis.
( Picture the scene: a typical American public high school.Collapse )

Conversations!
Of course, only in times of procrastination do I get these done. Meh.
The conversations from the meme I posted a few days ago! Okay, so a couple of them are really more scenes than conversations, per se, but at least I wrote something in which there is talking. This is a big step for me. Cookie?
Sam Winchester and Cloud Strife, for
woodfall (417 words):
( Dude, why don't you just shoot him?Collapse )
Sirius Black and Tamaki Suoh, for
ryuhime (183 words):
( Buraku-san, I don’t think you’re quite understanding your role in the Host Club.Collapse )
Sanzo and Yuki Eiri, for
daisy_took24 (463 words):
( Goddamn it. Broken elevators were one of the primary reasons that Yuki Eiri preferred to live on ground floors.Collapse )
Seregil and Jaime Lannister, for
moonfoot_gamgee (and
woodfall :) (665 words):
( Jaime looked with open contempt at the slight, wiry man facing him and holding a thin blade that looked like it would snap if Jaime’s sword so much as looked at it threateningly.Collapse )
P.S.
mjules, I got your card today! :D Thank you so much, it's lovely!

NewS Fic - "The Fourth Day"
FMA fic? What? From me?
Well. Of all the fandoms that I've had the opportunity to write in, the one that pings me is Fullmetal Alchemist. Hm.
I'm extremely rusty at fanfic, but I like this one enough to post it.
Untitled as of yet. Gen, Edward and Al. 982 words.
( What if there’s something somewhere that nothing else could equal? What if it were so important that you couldn’t trade it?Collapse )

Wow. This makes two drabbles in about a month. At my recent rate of productivity, that's fairly impressive.
Anyway, another totally random ficlet. ASOIAF fandom. I'm actually proud of this one, but it's difficult for me to tell with my own writing how good it actually is. :/
Title: Blood of Kings
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 859
Summary: Jon Snow had held council with Stannis Baratheon several times since the would-be king had taken up residence at the Wall. The strange red woman, the Lady Melisandre, had attended each time, but never before had she come alone.
( Owed, my lord, by those who would rip your destiny from your hands, blindly obedient to false gods and the unjust laws of men.Collapse )

I actually wrote fic. And it's A Song of Ice and Fire fic. And I actually like it! So please, if you've read the books, please read it and let me know what you think. :)
