Death Note
Point in Canon:
During her march to suicide, several hours after Light reveals that he's Kira but before she actually manages to carry out the suicide.
Age:
27
Birthday:
2/11/1976
Appearance:
Naomi stands at 171 cm (5'7”) and weighs 46 kg (~101 lbs), is of Japanese descent, has dark, straight hair that hangs at chest level and an affinity for leather attire. Hey look, there she is!

Abilities:
Naomi has above average intelligence and remarkable deductive reasoning abilities. She knows Capoeira and is readily able to apply it in combat (dance battler, baby!). As an ex-FBI agent, she also has some experience in handling guns and handcuffs, basic hacking skills, and the like. Oh, and she can ride a mean motorcycle.

Personality: (Quoted material comes directly from the book)

Naomi Misora, intelligent and tough, shines best when she's on her own, driven towards a goal. When she develops an objective, she will enthusiastically and diligently pursue it at all costs. Fortunately, being intellectually, physically, and emotionally capable, this is not a particularly difficult feat for her, as evidenced by her impressive, rapid climb up the FBI ladder. Naomi is clever, having deduced a trick in Kira's, an enemy's, killing methods that even L, the world's greatest detective, had not yet figured out at the time based on only a few clues. She's athletic, skillfully using Capoeira in response to a surprise attack from B, a criminal. And she's resilient, emotionally strong enough to quickly bounce back after the murder of her fiance and to subsequently pursue his murderer with unfaltering passion. However, that same ambition doubles as a fault.

Although strong-willed, Naomi does let her emotions get the best of her under the right circumstances. When Light offered her the opportunity to investigate and catch Kira, her fiance's murderer, under L, her burning desire to avenge him overpowered her judgment and caused her to drop her guard. The fact that Light resembled L, whom she trusted completely, similarly tapped into that emotional weakness. Being human, Misora is also subject to (sometimes subconscious) compassion. During one mission with an FBI team, the agent failed to shoot a 13 year old criminal, a move that almost cost her her job.

However, Naomi, in general, does not have strong opinions, aka “fits of righteousness,” about things unless they impact her personally or emotionally (such as when Kira killed her fiance). Despite this, there are still certain things that are dubbed “simply unforgivable” by her, such as murder of children. Although she does not always see everything in black-and-white terms, Naomi does have some sense of justice, especially when her emotions are triggered.

Personality-wise, Naomi is generally calm in demeanor. She expresses emotions but does not exaggerate them. When Naomi becomes angry, she will not give in to outbursts. Rather, she is more of the passive aggressive type, and especially when her pride is on the line, she will not lash out the offender in a fit of rage, but will instead directly state her opinions or make sarcastic remarks. Likewise, when Naomi's happy, she won't burst out laughing, but might chuckle quietly. Even when she cries, she does so in silence.

However, Naomi, being very goal-oriented, will become visibly and audibly excited if she sees or acquires something that leads her closer to accomplishing some task, particularly during those light bulb moments during an investigation. She might even get carried away (and accidentally step on people), and as stated above, her enthusiasm can sometimes end up clouding her judgments.

Misora has a sense of duty, but also of pride. She accepted L's request for assistance in the LABB murder case out of obligation, though grudgingly since L acted “like it was a given that she would cooperate with him,” which “showed no respect for her pride.” Despite this initial impression, she grew to respect L greatly and trusts him entirely.

Naomi is also something of a perfectionist and is very hard on herself whenever she fails at a task. After being put on temporary suspension for failure to shoot the child criminal, the agent faced immense guilt that “hung on her shoulders like a dead weight.”

Although Naomi prefers independence in the work setting, as “she was not good at working in groups, and her ability shone brightest when she escaped the bindings of organizations and worked on her own.” she cannot survive solely by her lonesome, and she knows it. Left alone, she will likely become aimless in what she wants to do. Her life was described as “walking through a town she didn't know,” such that “if she lived her life over again, she was sure she'd end up somewhere completely different.” Therefore, Naomi readily tries new things (within acceptable limits) but is never really sure of whether or not something truly fits her, having taken up Capoeira, riding motorcycles, joining the FBI (possibly all on a whim) and securing rapid promotion only to quit two years later, giving up everything for the sake of starting a family with her fiance, Raye Penber. And throughout everything, although content, Naomi never seemed to be completely happy. She was neither entirely happy being in the FBI, constantly “sick and tired of all the nonsense that came with the job,” nor retiring and relaxing by Raye's side, being unable to completely shut down her pesky “habit” of investigating cases.

When it comes to social interaction, Naomi has mere average social skills. She is very cautious around people whom she meets for the first time but also, in general, very respectful towards others and expects them to return the favor. Odd and creepy behaviors displeasures her greatly, as evidenced by her complete repugnance towards Ryuzaki (B), whose mannerisms were so offensive it gave her nightmares. Generally, she likes to keep things in their place: work should be serious, conduct should be within publicly respectable limits, the setting and image matters. If something does not sit right with Misora, she will not hesitate to speak her mind (and administer a good helping of sarcasm or two). In addition, Naomi would much rather put up a good fight than to back down when threatened, a trait that has earned her the oh-so-affectionate nickname, Misora Massacre, amongst her fellow FBI colleagues.

History:
Naomi Misora grew up in Japan. After graduating high school, she continued to pursue her education in the US and later joined the FBI, where she met coworker, Raye Penber, with whom she started dating. Despite being exceptionally good at her job, Naomi was not very popular at the workplace (possibly due to jealousy from fellow colleagues).

While on an assignment to investigate a drug cartel, she had been unable to pull the trigger on a 13 year old criminal, letting him get away and blowing the entire mission. Her superiors took this as an opportunity to put her on temporary suspension from the FBI. At that time, Naomi was already contemplating quitting the organization due to the unnecessary pressures involved when L, the greatest detective in the world, contacted her in private, requesting Naomi's help in solving a series of murders dubbed the Wara Ningyo murders (and later renamed the Los Angeles BB Murder Cases). Until that point, murders of three seemingly unrelated people (with really bad alliterative names) had been committed and a fourth one was predicted to occur. Naomi's task was to investigate these three crime scenes, figure out what tied them together, prevent the fourth murder, and apprehend the perpetrator.

Upon investigating the first crime scene, Naomi met self-proclaimed detective, Ryuzaki, a man with odd mannerisms that immediately earned her distrust. Despite utter repugnance towards the man, Misora ultimately reluctantly agreed to work together with him. Throughout the investigation, Naomi managed to piece together the clues with hints from Ryuzaki. She also kept in touch with L through phone, and the latter eventually revealed the murderer's identity, a man called B who was raised at Wammy's House, an orphanage with the goal of fostering genius children so that one of them would become the next L.

With Ryuzaki's aid, Naomi was able to determine where the fourth and final murder was to take place. There were two possible locations, so the two decided to split up. While Naomi waited for the criminal to make his appearance at her assigned post, she mentally backtracked through some recent events and unexplained details regarding the crime scenes, suddenly figuring out that Ryuzaki had been trying to lead her astray from the start, that he was actually the murderer, B. She immediately darted to the room he was stationed at and bust open the door to find Ryuzaki, B, a flaming mess, having attempted to burn himself to death, committing a suicide disguised as murder in order to create an unsolvable case for the great detective, L. But Misora managed to extinguish the flames and arrest him in time, thereby solving the case on behalf of L.

Following B's capture, Naomi was invited back to the bureau. While on her way, she met the real L, who made the mistake of trying to hug her as a form of greeting, which was perceived by Misora as assault and earned the detective a nice kick down the stairs. Although she noticed something strange yet familiar about the man (who also introduced himself as Ryuzaki), Naomi for some reason could not believe that he was L himself, and she would continue to convince herself that she had only ever interacted with him through a computer and phone.

Naomi's success in the LABB case earned her great prestige in the FBI. However, that didn't stop her boyfriend, now fiance, from constantly fretting over her safety. Eventually she agreed to quit the FBI in order to start a family with Raye. That winter, they flew to Japan under the pretense of meeting Naomi's family when in reality, Raye was ordered to tail a suspect for Kira, a murderer capable of killing criminals all over the world by giving them heart attacks. One of the suspects was none other than Light Yagami, Kira himself, who killed Raye via deception and threats.

The news devastated Naomi, who after a brief period of mourning, became determined to capture Kira in order to avenge her fiance. After going through everything Raye had told her and examining the pattern of recent criminal deaths, she was able to deduce on her own that Kira was amongst those tailed by Raye, that he needed a person's name in order to kill him/her, and that he could not only control the victim but also kill by means other than heart attacks.

She attempted to relay this information to the Japanese task force the next day, but they were unavailable at the time. Instead, she ran into Light, who unfortunately resembled the L she had once worked under. As a result, she made the mistake of spilling to him all of her findings, prompting him to kill her before any of it leaked to the task force. Fortunately, Naomi had given the man an alias, which appeared to prevent her death. However, Light, being the magnificently manipulative bastard that he is, was able to obtain Misora's ID by offering her the chance to work with L again on the Kira case. Unable to resist the opportunity, Naomi dropped her guard, signing her own death warrant by revealing her true name.

Her death was to be suicide. She had 48 hours to think of the best way to commit suicide without alerting anyone else such that her body would not be found. During those allotted 48 hours, she was to think of nothing but suicide. With these provisions in place, Kira triumphantly sent the defeated woman on her way to death.

First Person Sample:

[Uneven breathing is heard as the audio suddenly comes on] Wh – [and is just as abruptly cut off.

Naomi puts a hand to her temple, frustrated at her impulsiveness. She had to be careful. He already knows her voice after all. Voice, face, name, everything! For all she knows, she was and still is under that monster's control. Frantically, the former FBI agent switches to text instead.]

Who's in charge here? I need to get to the closest police station. Please, it's urgent!

[Not even they could be completely trusted, but god, she was finally free from that unnatural, unbearable death wish that had smothered her for what seemed like an eternity, she was finally free to think, and who knows for how long such freedom will last. Her finger flies toward the "send" button but pauses at the last second. Naomi reads over the note she had just written in that obvious rush of panic. Ugh, like an agitated mess.]

Thank you.

[She decides to tack on for good measure before ending the feed along with a long overdue exhale.]

Third Person Sample:

She neither held them in nor forced them out. She simply let them glide on their own.

"Raye's dead," the woman whispered to no one.

She continued to let the tears fall, yet she was not crying. There was no longer traces of melancholy in her demeanor, for she had already exhausted herself in mourning, only emptiness. He's dead, so what now?

“No,” she clenched her fists. This was not her. This pathetic creature lying to waste her life away was definitely not the Naomi Misora she knew. She had lost her fiance, but she could not lose herself.

"He was murdered,” corrected Naomi, “by Kira." Life surfaced back into her eyes, and they burned crimson.

The phone rang, pulling the woman's reluctant gaze towards the offensive device. News sure traveled quickly. She was not in the mood for conversation, but she had a fairly good idea of who it might be and felt obligated to take the call.

"N – Naomi!"

"Mother."

"Oh, you had us so worried." The older woman's voice was shaking. "We thought that he had gotten to you too."

"..." What to say?

"Ah, I'm sorry for just blurting it out like – Ah, no, what I mean is” She tried to find the right words, having been so worried that she had lost her train of thought. "I'm so sorry about what happened, Naomi dear. We were so worried. You must feel terrible."

"I am upset, but …”

"Honey, please come home! You aren't safe if you -"

"No." That settled it. Her mother wanted to keep her safe, just like Raye had wanted to keep her safe. The former FBI agent had pried herself away from the Kira case, because she had allowed her betrothed to shield her from danger, and it had cost him his life. Regret now intertwined with fury.

"I'm sorry Mom," she continued, voice firm. "I appreciate the call. I really do, but right now, I just need some time to think." Click.

Naomi strode to her closet to pick out one of her many leather jackets, donned it on and stepped out onto the freezing balcony. The cold would numb her body and emotions, allowing her to think clearly. As she leaned against the railing, Misora churned through the entirety of recent events that took place since her arrival in Japan. She drilled through every word that had escaped Raye's mouth, every last detail of every news article and broadcasts she had come across, no corners left unswept.

That all too familiar investigative sensibility that her loving yet overprotective fiance had desperately urged her to suppress instantly soared back into her being. Raye's story, the bus jacking, the bus jacker, the context of it all, the pattern of the murders, and that pesky ID card. Could it really all be coincidence? The gears turned as everything steadily fell into place. All she needed now was to just investigate a few key locations in order to handle some loose ends.

I will expose your tricks, Kira.” Naomi turned. To avenge Raye. She dropped her head. And to redeem herself.

The wind nipped at her pale face, lifted her dark tresses, egging her on. Promptly, the resolute woman marched back into the room, and already she was working her way towards the next step of her personal investigation.
