About the Program

Africa Centre’s Basketball program, an extension of the Mentorship and Leadership program, engages youth in skill-building through recreational play led by experienced coaches who model positive and responsible behaviour. The program fosters strong peer connections through shared activities and teamwork.

Grounded in youth development and resilience frameworks, the program goes beyond “fun and games” by providing structured support and meaningful opportunities that help youth build confidence, skills, and a sense of belonging. This intentional approach strengthens both the impact of the program and the overall development of participating youth.

Co-Ed Basketball

A program for both boys and girls, ages 10 to 19.

  • Thursdays: 6 PM – 8 PM
  • Sundays: 4 PM – 6 PM
  • Location: Clareview Community Recreation Centre, Basketball Court

A program for girls, ages 8 to 17.

  • Every Tuesday: Starting May 5, 2026

Sam Assembe

Basketball Coach

Coach Sam is a former University of New Brunswick (Saint John campus) varsity student-athlete. During his university playing years, he competed in soccer and basketball, earning accolades that include Academic All-Canadian nods and an Athlete of the Year award.

Professionally, Coach Sam is a CPA and currently works as a Tax Analyst for the Government of Alberta.

Abena Boateng-Queeley

Basketball Coach

Health and fitness has been Abena's passion for many years. She played competitive sports all through her childhood and continued to play women's soccer for a local team.  Straight out of high school, she developed a love for leading and coaching. 

Abena obtained her Fitness Instructor Specialist certification and started leading and coaching participants in safe and energetic environments.  She coached her daughter's NEBA basketball teams for four years.  She tries to lead by example and encourages others to adopt a healthy lifestyle.  Her lifelong philosophy is to keep moving.  It does not have to be structured or perfect, She just keeps moving, one step at a time.
