Generative AI

This guide introduces generative AI tools and offers tips for using them responsibly and effectively in research.

Welcome to the Guide to Generative AI!

Generative AI

This guide is to help students, faculty, staff, and other members of the AFIT academic community better understand, evaluate, and responsibly use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

As the Air Force Institute of Technology is the Department of the Air Force's leader for advanced, multi-disciplinary academic education, as well as its institution for initial technical and professional continuing education, AI is becoming an increasingly relevant and rapidly evolving area of interest across all technical domains. From brainstorming and summarizing to literature discovery and productivity support, generative AI tools offer a range of new capabilities. However, they also present challenges related to credibility, ethics, and responsible use.

Guide Overview

The purpose of this guide is to help you:

  • Learn about popular generative AI tools for research that you can access through AFNet.
  • Use generative AI for tasks like brainstorming, generating keywords, and summarizing information.
  • Evaluate the output of AI tools, write effective prompts, and cite them correctly.
  • Understand ethical issues, including plagiarism, bias, transparency, and copyright.
