Vendr is a new, paid ecommerce package for Umbraco 8+, built on top of the foundations of TeaCommerce, one of the most popular packages for Umbraco 7.

In itself, Vendr already includes a wide array of features out-of-the-box, but there are also many further customization options through their complete stack of APIs. It also offers a variety of SEO and marketing configurations to help you better optimize your Umbraco ecommerce site.

Vendr offers two licensing options: a standard one-off payment of € 1,500 with 12 months of updates, or a more manageable subscription license at €85 per month with unlimited updates and can be canceled anytime.

(Note: Vendr is also endorsed by Merchello, a popular open source Umbraco ecommerce package that is now discontinued.)

UCommerce

Ucommerce is considered the most popular and “most mature” ecommerce package for Umbraco, having been originally built on the CMS in 2009 and continually improving since then.

However, unlike Umbraco, Ucommerce is not open source. Instead, it’s built with a “framework first” architecture that still allows users some flexibility in working with the system, along with a well-exposed API and documentation for developers.

Starting with Umbraco 9, Ucommerce now offers only one single license option at €6,500 per year. Customers have to inquire directly for license prices for version 8 and below. Aside from these paid licenses, Ucommerce also offers a free version that can be downloaded anytime. The free version covers most of the basic functionalities needed in an ecommerce website, but for more advanced features, it may also be worth looking into the premium plans.

As with other systems, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to ecommerce packages for Umbraco.

For example, some companies may prefer Vendr’s flexible pricing options. On the other hand, some businesses may opt for the stability that Ucommerce offers, with it being the more mature system out of the two.

Aside from using Vendr or Ucommerce to bring in ecommerce functionalities to your Umbraco site, you can also take advantage of other packages available in the market to further extend the core features of Umbraco CMS.

There are packages that work alongside ecommerce packages—that is, they extend Umbraco itself and work hand-in-hand with the webshop system. Some examples could be packages for SEO, search function, etc. Here are packages developed for Umbraco.

On the other hand, there are also packages that work on top of ecommerce packages. You can think of them as “sub-packages”, in that they are specifically developed for the ecommerce package and not Umbraco itself. These packages therefore require that you first install the ecommerce package that it’s built for. Some examples include packages for inventory management, shipping, or product management.
