You answered “DVR” as the method you use to connect to cameras. Generally speaking, DVRs tend to integrate with analog cameras. As a result, DVRs offer limited compatibility with the modern central stations and analytics. If you're currently running a DVR, you’ll likely want to consider upgrading it to an NVR or a VMS. This change may require upgrading to IP cameras, but you can also consider keeping your existing cameras and connecting them to your new system through analog-to-digital converters.

You answered “NVR” as the method you use to connect to cameras. NVRs are an excellent option for smaller sites. While they lack the sophistication of higher-end VMS systems, they're easy to install due to being IP based. Even if your NVR is a closed system and can't plug into central stations or analytics, you can still upgrade your cameras to current industry standards by connecting them directly to those services. While you can add analytics to NVRs, if you have more than one server across your security camera deployment, you might want to consider migrating to a VMS before investing heavily in advanced analytics.

If you're running a video management system (VMS), you're in an excellent position to integrate the advanced video analytics from Actuate into your current system. VMSes provide state-of-the-art software for security camera management and monitoring. While simpler systems rarely exceed NVR in terms of capability, high-end VMS systems provide a solid foundation for managing and growing your security system. Many VMS systems provide onboarding analytics such as loitering and line crossing, for example, but their real power is in their compatibility. If you don't fall into one of these categories, you'll likely want to consider upgrading to an NVR or VMS before investing in advanced analytics. Certain manufacturers such as Axis and Mobotix even have onboarding compatibility so that cameras can emulate a VMS and get full functionality with even the most high-end analytics.
