What Heavy Gauge Steel Fabrication Means at 8 Star

Most steel fabrication shops in Melbourne handle light-to-medium gauge. We're built for the bigger envelope — long-span beams, heavy gauge steel plate, large-bore tube and structural members that require full-penetration welds and certified processes. Here's what our workshop can absorb — from laser cutting steel components to welded structural assemblies.

800×300
mm
Universal Beam / H-Beam

Fabricate UB, UC and welded I-sections up to 800×300 mm — suitable for long-span warehouse roofs, mezzanine floors and multi-storey residential transfer beams.

900
mm Ø
Large-Bore Tube Cutting

Heavy-duty laser tube cutter handles structural CHS, SHS and RHS up to 900 mm diameter — clean, weld-ready joints without secondary grinding.

13.5
metres
Single-Pass Length

Process full-length structural members in one pass. Fewer joints, fewer welds, faster delivery, and stronger continuous spans for portal frames and gantries.

22
mm thick
Plate Roll & Form

Plate rolling, folding and guillotine work from 1.6 mm sheet up to 22 mm structural plate — base plates, gussets, cleats and stiffeners cut to spec.

Why Builders Trust 8 Star with Heavy Steel

Heavy structural steel doesn't forgive shortcuts. Below is what separates a workshop that can be relied on for load-bearing work from one that just cuts to length.

Power-Station Welding Background

Our lead fabricators trained in boiler-making and power-station pressure work — the welding discipline transfers directly to structural members that have zero tolerance for crack propagation.

Compliant to Australian Standards

Welding to AS/NZS 1554.1, structural fabrication aligned with AS/NZS 5131 construction categories. Certificate III Engineering Fabrication Trade and Certificate IV Frontline Management on the floor.

End-to-End From Drawing to Delivery

Workshop-led fabrication — cutting, drilling, welding and finishing handled in-house at our Dandenong facility, with our own crew managing on-site installation. Single point of accountability, no finger-pointing between subs.

Mill Certificates & Batch Traceability

Steel traceable back to mill heat numbers on request — critical for commercial, government and engineer-signed-off work where compliance documentation matters.

100+ Structural Projects Delivered

Track record across residential, commercial and warehouse work. Trusted partner of builders including Becon Constructions, AI Building & Restoration, Genis Steel and Surdex.

Laser Cutting Steel — Heavy-Duty Workshop vs General Steel Shop

Not all "structural steel fabricators" are set up for engineered, load-bearing work — especially laser cutting structural steel at scale and processing heavy gauge steel sections. Here's where 8 Star sits against a typical small-to-medium Melbourne steel shop — so you know what you're buying before you buy.

Capability Typical Steel Shop 8 Star Metal Engineering
Max H-Beam Capacity Up to ~ 460 UB standard rolled Up to 800 × 300 mm welded section
Tube / CHS Diameter Up to ~ 300 mm Ø with manual cutting Up to 900 mm Ø via heavy-duty laser tube cutter
Tube / CHS Diameter Up to ~ 300 mm Ø with manual cutting Up to 900 mm Ø via heavy-duty laser tube cutter
Single-Pass Length Multi-piece splices required for > 9 m members 13.5 m single-pass — fewer splices, faster install
Welding Standard General workshop welds, often uncategorised Aligned to AS/NZS 1554.1 structural welding
Fabrication Standard Build-to-print without category sign-off Worked to AS/NZS 5131 construction categories
Lead Fabricator Background General trade welder 30+ yrs incl. power-station boiler-making
Mill Cert & Batch Traceability Available on large orders only Available on request, all project sizes
In-House Scope Cutting in-house, welding/finishing often outsourced Workshop-led fabrication + on-site installation crew

Comparison reflects general industry baseline for small-to-medium Melbourne steel shops. Individual workshops vary — ask any fabricator to confirm capacity in writing.

Heavy Structural Steel — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions builders, owner-builders and project managers ask before they place a structural steel order with us.

What's the maximum size of structural steel you can fabricate?

Our heavy-duty workshop in Dandenong handles structural members up to 13.5 metres in a single pass, H-beams up to 800×300 mm, and tube up to 900 mm diameter. Plate work ranges from 1.6 mm sheet through to 22 mm structural plate.

This covers virtually all residential, commercial and standard industrial requirements. For oversized jobs we can split members at engineered splice points and field-weld on site.

What information do you need to give me an accurate quote?

The faster you can give us the following, the faster we can turn around an itemised quote:

  • Engineer-stamped structural drawings (or sketches with sizes & lengths)
  • Site address — for measuring access and delivery logistics
  • Finish requirement — primed, painted, galvanised or powder-coat
  • Delivery timeline / site program if it's a builder's job
  • Whether you need installation, or supply-only

No drawings yet? Send us what you've got — we'll tell you what else is needed.

How long does a typical structural steel project take?

Lead time depends on project size, steel availability, finishing requirements and your site program. We scope a realistic delivery date at quote stage based on your specific job — committed in writing, against your build sequence.

The breakdown typically runs:

  • Take-off & quoting
  • Site measure (where bolt-down or existing-structure tolerance matters)
  • Fabrication — cutting, drilling, welding, QC
  • Finishing — primer, paint, galvanising or powder-coat
  • Delivery and on-site installation scheduled against your build program

For larger warehouse and commercial work, we commit to delivery dates that match your trades sequence, not the other way around.

What Australian Standards do you work to?

Heavy structural steel fabrication at 8 Star aligns with the standards your engineer will be expecting:

  • AS/NZS 1554.1 — Structural Steel Welding
  • AS/NZS 5131 — Structural Steelwork — Fabrication and Erection
  • AS/NZS 4680 — Hot-dip galvanised coatings (via partner galvaniser)

Our team holds Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication Trade (MEM30305), Certificate IV in Frontline Management, and Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship. We can provide weld procedure specifications and welder qualifications on request for engineer or building-surveyor sign-off.

Can you supply mill certificates and steel traceability?

Yes. We can provide mill certificates and steel batch / heat numbers on request — flag this at quoting stage and we'll route your job through the traceable supply chain.

This documentation is typically required for commercial projects, government tenders, and any job where the structural engineer or building surveyor requires written evidence of steel grade and origin.

Do you handle installation, or supply only?

Both. You can buy fabricated steel from us for your own rigger / installer to handle, or we can deliver and install on site.

For residential jobs we typically deliver with a crane truck and install columns, beams and posts in-place. For warehouse and commercial jobs we coordinate with your site supervisor on lifting plan, sequencing and safe-work-method statements.

What finishes do you offer for structural steel?

The finish depends on where the steel sits and how long it has to last:

  • Primer (red oxide / grey) — internal steel that will be encased, fire-rated or further coated by another trade
  • Two-pack paint system — exposed internal or sheltered external steel
  • Hot-dip galvanising — external, exposed or corrosion-prone environments including galvanised retaining walls
  • Powder-coat — architectural or visible feature steel where colour and finish matters

If you're unsure what's appropriate for your project, we'll recommend based on exposure class, lifespan requirement and budget.

Do you work with engineers, or do I need my own drawings?

For load-bearing structural steel, you'll need engineer-stamped drawings — we don't design structure, we fabricate to certified design. If you don't have an engineer yet, we can recommend Melbourne structural engineers we've worked with previously.

For non-structural metal fabrication — stairs, balustrades, gates, fences, decorative work — we can work from your concept sketches, reference photos or a brief.

What other metal services do you offer beyond structural steel?

Heavy structural steel is our main focus, but we run a full-scope workshop. We can package these alongside your structural order, or quote them as standalone jobs:

One workshop, one point of contact, one delivery — useful when a single project needs multiple metal trades coordinated.

Where are you located, and where do you deliver?

Workshop and office at 6 Damian Ct, Dandenong VIC 3175. We deliver structural steel across all of metropolitan Melbourne — from the south-east corridor through to the Mornington Peninsula, the eastern suburbs, and inner-west. Larger projects extend further into regional Victoria on request.
