Kraków nativity scenes (Polish: szopka krakowska) – a Christmas tradition originating from Kraków in Lesser Poland (Małopolska), Poland. Centred around constructing cribs and using the historical buildings of Kraków (most popular: St. Mary’s Basilica, Wawel Castle, the Sukiennice trade hall, the Barbican of Kraków), the Kraków nativity scenes are depicting historical, cultural and contemporary social events relating to life in the City of Krakow, Poland and the world.* This 19th century tradition was inscribed on the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018. Every year, the Museum of the City of Kraków is organizing the Kraków Nativity Scenes contest and exhibition.
