■What is a castle?

Ancient mountain castles began to be built throughout western Japan in preparation for invasions from continental countries such as China and Korea. It was used only in times of war as it was a defensive wall, and people lived at the foot of the mountain during peacetime.

・Nara - Heian period (castle fence)
Castle fences were built to control Emishi in the Tohoku region. The aforementioned ancient mountain castles eventually passed without any invasion from the continent, and similarly the castle fences became less necessary as bases for defense or invasion due to the return of the Emishi.

・Late Heian period to Muromachi period (medieval mountain castle)
