Paris, France
I’m not sure if you already know but “Paris” is not the city’s original name. When the first settlers in Paris, many centuries ago, were scrubbing their clothes on the muddy banks of the Seine, the city that would be founded on that spot was not referred to as Paris. Paris’s original name was Lutetia Parisiorum (called Lutèce in French), and the settlers were Celts known as the “Parisii.” It is believed that “Lutetia” comes from the Latin word “lutum,” which means “mud.” So the elegant, magic and glittering city that we all know and love, was probably first known as “mud town of the Parisii.”
.
Hi Ana….it’s been so long. Life gets crazy and I have not been good at getting around to blogs. I’m trying to play catch-up! I’ve missed you and your blog!
I had no idea Paris had such a “dirty” name. 😉 I love the story! I have a friend who is going to Paris next week. I’ll have to tell her this story! Thanks for your usual great post!
Interesting note about Paris, something I had never heard about before.

Yes, and at the time when the norwegian and danish vikings were on their way down towards the town from the north of France – then paid parisians the vikings generously to stay away… 😉
