There used to be a water fountain in the backyard where robins and hummingbirds gathered to splash around and enjoy themselves. For him, the scene was a peaceful respite from his wife’s sometimes overbearing ways.
Then, before he could get too comfortable, Lily replaced it with a shiny jacuzzi. It wasn’t for health reasons, but simply because her sister-in-law had gotten one first.
The fountain ended up in the shed, gathering mold and dust. Meanwhile, the jacuzzi had a short-lived moment of glory. It was used only a few times before Lily ignored it completely, like last year’s fitness resolution.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning.
Josh woke up early for breakfast and found his visiting grandfather scrolling on his iPhone.
“Grandpa,” he exclaimed, “no phones allowed at the kitchen table!”
“Who said so?” his grandfather asked.
“Mom did.”
“But I’m her father. That must count for something, don’t you think?”
Josh paused. “I suppose so… you’re the exception.”
From the kitchen doorway, his mother sighed. “Really?” she said, crossing her arms.
Grandpa grinned without looking up. “What? I taught you everything you know.”
She shook her head. “Clearly, I should have skipped that lesson.”
Josh smirked. “Too late now.”

He’d consumed a heroic amount of spicy food and decided to sail alone, hoping to relax with dignity. As he drifted farther from shore, the beachgoers shrank to specks, and with them vanished the unspoken rules of what society call decent behavior.
He glanced around. There was no one there but a mildly judgmental seagull. Good enough. He seized a bucket, answering destiny, and got to work.
Moments later, a deep, spiritual calm washed over him. The ocean sparkled. The breeze applauded. The seagull reconsidered its life choices.
“Oh, what a feeling!” he cried out, staring nobly at the horizon.
