politics on speed [03 Jun 2008|08:53pm]
the political news headlines have been hella confusing today.  in the automated feeds there has been almost consistently two bold headlines that directly contradict each other (even while the headlines have been changing hourly).  they can't both be right!

sometimes this world of 'fast' information can give you whiplash.  everybody's jumping the gun trying to be the one with the story out first...but what the hell is the story?

so i was searching through this article, America's Top Public High Schools, and didn't see my alma mater there. bummed me out!

then i found it...in the article The Public Elites.   Subtitle: "Some schools didn't make our list because their students are too good. The best of the best."

heck yeah.

i keep making the mistake of sitting down to eat when i come home, which effectively spoils any inclination to go to my laundry for the rest of the evening.  this is how i end up running out of clean clothes each week.

meanwhile, i listened to the album version of this song multiple times today.  it's one of my favorites.  jbt came to santa cruz a few weeks ago, but i didn't go because it was in the middle of the week.  i need to break out of that comfort zone once in a while.

and now, time for bed [10 May 2008|10:55pm]
wrapped up a busy day with a binge-fest on haley bonar videos on youtube.  i didn't even know the woman was on youtube, and i get the sudden joy of listening to a hundred songs i'd never heard before plus finding out she's performed with andrew bird!  *shriek!*

got to her cover of 'little boxes', which lead to a compilation of all the people who have ever sung it for 'weeds,' which lead to regina spektor's version, which i loved, which also lead to a wiki article about it (useful, as i'd actually never heard the song before - turns out it's about daly city, which i was in today), which lead to the most awesome spoof.

okay, one more.  regina spektor pretty much is a tori amos for the new generation.  i don't even seem to mind how much of a rip off she is - i'm too glad to have access to that kind of music again (when was the last time i liked one of tori's most recent albums, anyway?).

Mildred Loving, matriarch of interracial marriage, dies

what a great last name, considering the cause. i've never heard of loving day before, but i feel obligated now to write it down and celebrate it. if only in protest of how segregated the south still is. and to honor that these days i'm allowed to be in a relationship with any dark skinned, dark eyed guy i choose.

i may very well hate it in practice, but in theory i love the idea of a couple sharing only one car.  my married cousins are doing it right now, and so are one of my coworkers and his wife.  the financial benefits are large. it would save the average family $400-500 a month, plus at least $500-1,000 in maintenance/repairs/insurance over the course of a year.  that's a big deal.

but more than that i love this: that having to share the car (carpooling to and from work each day) provides valuable before-and-after-the-office time for you to talk to each other without the distraction of the gym, internet, tv, or the dirty dishes in the sink.  that's good time to have together.  it would be awesome to know that for twenty minutes to an hour each day you could have your spouse's undivided attention to talk about how your day went, during a period of time that would otherwise be wasted.

where it would suck, of course, is in conflicting weekend engagements, but i guess you'd get good at carpooling with your friends too.

calling my techie friends for advice [15 Apr 2008|01:33pm]

my cable internet provider jacked my price and won't negotiate it down to a level i can afford. so i canceled (and they didn't call my bluff, boohoo).

now i'm getting "high speed" (not really, but oh well) DSL from at&t. they would not give me any of the promotions because i had to order by phone. i had to order by phone because they would not sell me direct internet access online without a home phone service bundle. meanies. because i wasn't allowed any promotion and they charge a lot for the "equipment," i passed on it and am trying to research better prices for all that would have come in the package. i've done this successfully with cable internet service prior, but i've never had DSL before so i have a few questions.

i know i need to come up with:
  • a dsl modem with associated cables
  • an installation cd
  • potentially, filter(s)
  • and...?
the guy over the phone was trying to intimidate me with the price of filters if i bought them separate from the package. i just spent five minutes online reading about filters. if i don't have a land line, have nothing at all hooked up to my phone jacks other than the modem, do i still need a filter? there are no other devices to receive interference, so i'm guessing i don't need a filter unless it directly affects the signal reaching the modem. does it? am i right/wrong?

is there something else i should be looking for as well?  is it stupid to assume my current wireless router should work fine with the dsl modem, as in theory the output from a modem is the same no matter whether cable or dsl?  right/wrong?

meanwhile i'm out of internet service for a week (lack of smart planning on my part).  and i have a big-deal meetup on saturday that generally will require a lot of internet oversight/management.  oops.

"There's an old saying: Not knowing is most intimate. Meaning, the way to get closest to something is to stop having a lot of ideas about it. Or, there are ways of knowing that aren't so much about concepts and opinions. Or, when we approach something as an expert, we sometimes stop exploring possibilities."

i've always meant to make a post where i mapped out the bollywood actors i know in order to keep them straight. i have a terrible habit of knowing neither a man's name nor what movie i saw him in, yet annoyingly being able to see his face in my mind's eye. this does make it difficult to talk about my favorite actors whilst on a hike with indian girls.

The nature of the current situation is insistent that you choose a side on whatever issue may be on the table, lk. More than likely, you are sitting on the fence while trying to figure out where you ought to put your energy at this time.
