[F.A.Q.] How do I credit?

Crediting for the use of something is essential. Unfortunately some people don't know how to credit or are newbies to livejournal and unsure about how to do it. So here's my little tutorial to help you out. :)

FOR ICONS;
Step 1: Getting to the userpics page depends on which style of browser you are using for livejournal. If getting to the userpic page is too complicated for you, you can always try bookmarking the editpics link. Though I highly suggest you learn to navigate to the userpic page, but it is better if you choose which ever method works best for you. :)

If you are using XColibur, you'll want to highlight "Manage" on the darker toolbar then highlight "Userpics" on the toolbar that appears below the dark one. Once you click on "Userpics" you will be taken to a screen that gives you a list of your userpics and a place for you to upload the icons you downloaded.

If you're using Dystopia, on the left side is a sidebar with links to different parts of livejournal. In the third box labelled "Your Settings" there is a link called "Your Userpics". Once you click on "Your Userpics" you will be taken to a screen that gives you a list of your userpics and a place for you to upload the icons you downloaded.

If you're using Lynx, you'll want to go to the sitemap, look under "Your Stuff" and then under "Profile" and click on "Edit Userpics". Once you click on "Edit Userpics" you will be taken to a screen that gives you a list of your userpics and a place for you to upload the icons you downloaded.

If you're using the Beta Navigation, highlight "Profile" on the dark blue bar at the top of the screen. A drop down list will appear, move down so you'll have "Edit Userpics" highlighted. Once you click on "Edit Userpics" you will be taken to a screen that gives you a list of your userpics and a place for you to upload the icons you downloaded.

Step 2: Regardless of the browser you're using for livejournal, you'll always end up with a similar looking page that allows you to upload and edit your user icons. While there is an option to upload a picture through a link or an URL, I suggest you not use it. Instead right click and save the icon you like to your computer. Click on "Browser" and locate the folder where you saved the icon. Then click on "open" once you've clicked on the icon you wanted to upload.

In Keywords you can put anything, words you associate with that picture or just something to help you remember the icon when you're selecting it to post comments or entries. The really, really, really important part is the Comments located under Keywords. In the comment box you'll give credit to the iconmaker! In the picture I put in "Icon by <lj user="yonside">" which is how I want to be credited, other iconmakers may have a different method of how they want to be credited but this is the most common.

Working with a base icon you'll need to replace "icon" with "base". Base icons are basically icons already cut down to 100x100 in size by an iconmaker so you can edit them and add text. Some iconmakers have different policies for using base icons but with my base icons I want to be credit, no matter how much you edit them.

Step 3: Click on "Proceed" and upload that bad boy!! Congratulations! You've successfully uploaded and given credit for an icon!!
