Spring Events 2017

Spring has sprung (or will be soon enough). So I guess that means leaving the house? Here’s four places you can find me in the near future (if you look carefully)!

WonderCon. Anaheim, CA March 31st-April 2nd.

I’ll be in the Artist Alley and will magically appear on panels listed below. http://www.comic-con.org/wca/2017/special-guests

FRIDAY March 31:

3:00-4:00 Guest Spotlight: Comics Drawing Party with Dave Roman & his Mom!

Join author & illustrator Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy, Goosebumps, Teen Boat!) as he teams up with his mom, Miriam (who has never been to a comic convention and is scared to even draw a stick figure), and several audience members to make completely improvised comics. Expect lots of embarrassing stories, crazy characters, and hilarious twists and turns! Room 211

SUNDAY April 2nd:

1:00p.m. – 2:00p.m. Capable Kids. Age is no barrier to the intrepid adventurers in works by participants Judd Winick (Hilo), Hope Larson (Compass South), Tania del Rio (Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods), Jonathan Stokes (Addison Cooke and the Treasure of the Incas), and Dave Roman (The Race for Boatlantis). Moderated by Judy Neeb, Children’s Librarian, County of Los Angeles Public Library. Room 209

Battle of the Books Celebration, Carroll County, MD April 4th. All-ages literary event held at Winters Mill High School Open to the public, featuring myself and Kate Hannigan (The Detective’s Assistant) along with free refreshments (the best kind)! https://library.carr.org/programs/program.asp?record=41832&datenumber=68144

DINK! Independent Comics Expo. Denver, CO April 8th-9th. I’ll be hosting a cartoon character workshop and appearing on a panel called Not Just For Kids. Creating Comics For All-Ages. http://dinkdenver.com/

Swing by and get some free comics! http://www.bedrockcity.com/content/50/Calendar/ Gaithersburg Book Festival.
RIP John Hurt

John Hurt was one of my favorite actors, and in my childhood view, the best storyteller ever.

<lj-embed id="91" />

“The Soldier and Death” directed by Jim Henson is probably still the coolest thing I’ve ever seen on television. But I love every episode. I could watch them every day. And a huge part of the appeal is John Hurts performance as The Storyteller. His narration is so engaging and comforting like a warm fire.

“If death needs a new friend, I cannot fight him.”
“But howsoever life smiles on us, the last laugh is reserved for death.”
-The Storyteller

Thursday at New York Comic Con

Here’s where you can find me at the NY Comic Con.

First Second Books: Booth 2239 Signing copies of Astronaut Academy from 11:30am – 12:00pm

You’re Such a Geek: A Guide for Teachers, Students, and Parents to Help Cope with Bullying. [Thursday, 10/6, from 12:30-1:30.]

Despite nerd culture being at the forefront of popular culture today, many young comic con lovers feel isolated in their school community. With bullying of young people on the basis of their interests being one of the most challenging problems to overcome, how can teachers, parents, and students confront these issues together and apart? In a forum-style panel which will focus primarily on addressing audience questions, experts in the field will try to shed some light on the darkness of bullying.

Library Networking Session [ 2:45 – 3:45pm Location: 1C03]

Talking about Science Comics and the popularity of Manga.

Happy Birthday to First Second books!

This week is the tenth anniversary of First Second Books! To celebrate, Travis Jonker and School Library Journal asked a bunch of First Second authors to redraw the cover of one of our favorite First Second books by another author. I drew a homage to Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant by Tony Cliff. And the amazing George O’Connor (Olympians) did a fun rendition of my Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity!

It’s been a unique privilege to have my books be in such great company. Love and hugs to everyone at First Second past and present and wishing them another 10 years of great graphic novels to their legacy.

Check out all the great cover tributes over at School Library Journal!

New York Comic Con

Check back for more information.

You can find me at the NY Comic Con at the following times and places…

Thursday October 8th

Assembling your “Nerd Herd:” Creating a Safe Space for Students in Your School
4:15 PM – 5:15 PM Room 1A05
Despite Geek culture being at the forefront of popular culture today, many young Comic Con lovers feel isolated in their school community. With bullying of young people on the basis of their interests being one of the most challenging problems to overcome, how can teachers help foster their students’ interests and give them a safe place to share them with like minded peers? Educators come together to talk about how they built their “Nerd Herd” and how it has done just that. They share their stories and those of their students on how bringing like minded people together can not only create a barrier against outside negativity but also help build confidence and self-respect.
SPEAKERS
Alex Simmons, John Shableski, Michael Gianfrancesco, Dave Roman, Eric Kallenborn, & Tami Stronach

Sunday, October 11, 2015

Goosebumps & The Baby-Sitters Club Revisited
10:45 AM – 11:30 AM Room 1A10
Join legendary Authors R.L. Stine (Goosebumps) and Ann M. Martin (The Baby- Sitters Club) as they chat with bestselling and award-winning graphic novel Creators Dave Roman (Graphix Presents: Goosebumps) and Raina Telgemeier (The Baby-Sitters Club Graphic Novels) about re-imaging their classic stories as graphic novels. From Stony Brook to HorrorLand, the original Authors and their reimagining Illustrators describe the process and challenges of drawing their classic characters in full color.
SPEAKERS: Ann M. Martin, Dave Roman, R.L. Stine, & Raina Telgemeier

Slappy’s Tales of Horror

Check out this neat ventriloquist dummy I found in the thrift shop!

That must mean that Goosebumps Graphix: Slappy’s Tales of Horror is in stores now! The book features four creepy stories including my comics adaptation of “Night of the Living Dummy,” the classic tale by R.L. Stine that introduces the world’s most villainous ventriloquist dummy! You’ll definitely want to know Slappy’s full origin before you see the new Goosebumps movie with Jack Black! Being prepared is you best defense in warding off evil puppets.
