Join author & illustrator Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy, Goosebumps, Teen Boat!) as he teams up with his mom, Miriam (who has never been to a comic convention and is scared to even draw a stick figure), and several audience members to make completely improvised comics. All are invited to attend a special event and book signing with authors Kate Hannigan and Dave Roman. Free and open to the public in celebration of the Learning Advantage Partnership’s 10 year anniversary. This year’s elementary school reading list for Battle of the Books included works from both Hannigan and Roman. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Refreshments will be served. This event will take place at Winters Mill High School.

I’m honored to be a guest this year at DINK!

DINK is a fun, first-class expo emphasizing the independent spirit, cultural relevance, imagination, and community of comics, graphic novels, zines, art, publishers, and fans. Our mission to promote and further the impact of their work on the world. Internationally renowned creators as well as local Denver artists will appear.

I will be there both Saturday and Sunday and will be hosting a workshop for kids, so be sure to check the program!

RIP John Hurt

John Hurt was one of my favorite actors, and in my childhood view, the best storyteller ever.

“The Soldier and Death” directed by Jim Henson is probably still the coolest thing I’ve ever seen on television. But I love every episode. I could watch them every day. And a huge part of the appeal is John Hurts performance as The Storyteller. His narration is so engaging and comforting like a warm fire.

You’re Such a Geek: A Guide for Teachers, Students, and Parents to Help Cope with Bullying. [Thursday, 10/6, from 12:30-1:30.]

Despite nerd culture being at the forefront of popular culture today, many young comic con lovers feel isolated in their school community. With bullying of young people on the basis of their interests being one of the most challenging problems to overcome, how can teachers, parents, and students confront these issues together and apart? In a forum-style panel which will focus primarily on addressing audience questions, experts in the field will try to shed some light on the darkness of bullying.

Happy Birthday to First Second books!

This week is the tenth anniversary of First Second Books! To celebrate, Travis Jonker and School Library Journal asked a bunch of First Second authors to redraw the cover of one of our favorite First Second books by another author. I drew a homage to Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant by Tony Cliff. And the amazing George O’Connor (Olympians) did a fun rendition of my Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity!

It’s been a unique privilege to have my books be in such great company. Love and hugs to everyone at First Second past and present and wishing them another 10 years of great graphic novels to their legacy.

With bullying of young people on the basis of their interests being one of the most challenging problems to overcome, how can teachers help foster their students’ interests and give them a safe place to share them with like minded peers? Educators come together to talk about how they built their “Nerd Herd” and how it has done just that. They share their stories and those of their students on how bringing like minded people together can not only create a barrier against outside negativity but also help build confidence and self-respect.

Check out this neat ventriloquist dummy I found in the thrift shop!

That must mean that Goosebumps Graphix: Slappy’s Tales of Horror is in stores now! The book features four creepy stories including my comics adaptation of “Night of the Living Dummy,” the classic tale by R.L. Stine that introduces the world’s most villainous ventriloquist dummy! You’ll definitely want to know Slappy’s full origin before you see the new Goosebumps movie with Jack Black! Being prepared is you best defense in warding off evil puppets.
