🧵On February 6th, we, the Radius of Arab American Writers, emailed panel moderators – our colleagues and fellow writers – at the upcoming Association of Writers and Writing Programs Conference via publicly available email addresses.

Please read our statement on the powerful action that took place the #AWP24 book fair on Friday, as well as @awpwriter's continued lack of communication and transparency.
On February 10th, a pro-Palestine protest led by grassroots organizers took place at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs Conference. Although the Radius of Arab American Writers and Mizna did not organize this event, we stand unequivocally behind our community members in their need to demand solidarity and express pain. The protest was peaceful, and involved organizers reading the names of children martyred by the state of Israel.
In the course of the event, security physically and verbally harassed members of the SWANA community and our allies, especially targeting our Black allies. This response o this event, as well as to the global solidarity statement we distributed on February 6th, demonstrate an egregious shortfall in institutional responses to the grief, pain, and calls for help of the oppressed communities.
In a statement to exhibitors this morning, AWP communicated its "focus on supporting the challenging wok writers do engaging in discourse around difficult times and subjects." Yet, the Association has, to date, ignored our invitations to direct conversation, as well as similar invitations from others in our community. We again invite the Association to directly engage with our community - its members - to discuss how our shared spaces might do better in the future with regard to supporting and responding to communities for whom writing and survival can never be separated.

The language we invited panelists and attendees of #AWP24 to share is below.
The event organizers would like to acknowledge that we are gathering during an active genocide taking place in Gaza, and that the current violence in Palestine is the continuation of decades of colonial violence under Israeli apartheid. We stand in solidarity with victims of genocide in Sudan and Congo, and with the Indigenous peoples on whose ancestral homelands this conference is being held, including the Osage, Kaw, Missouria, Shawnee and Wyandot tribes. We stand firmly against anti-Blackness and recognize that police violence and all white supremacist violence must be named and opposed. These forms of violence, along with transphobic violence being legislated in Missouri and other states, endanger the lives of trans, queer, gender-nonconforming, and nonbinary people. Therefore, as we begin our event, we wish to underscore that none of us are free until all of us are free, and that all anti-racist, liberationist, and decolonial struggles are intertwined.

The Board of the Radius of Arab American Writers (RAWI) grieves the passing of an extraordinary human and literary titan: Etel Adnan. Adnan’s contributions to RAWI in particular and to the storytelling world broadly cannot be overstated.

    Join us in supporting @PoetsGaza!
RAWI is calling on folks who have extra cash, who are fully employed, or financially comfortable to contribute to Gaza Poets Society ongoing fundraiser -- please see the link here & in bio: paypal.me/gazaguy440

With every day of the genocide, we are losing more of our family, friends, & colleagues in Gaza. With no medicine, no food, no water, Gaza is turning to us for help and support. We must heed their call.

We need to show up as a community to help however way we can. More importantly: we must do all we can to get in the way of the genocide.
