The resignation of Samy Bengio is a big loss for Google. Samy co-founded one of the most fundamental research groups in industry since Bell Labs, also one of the most profitable ones. Samy's support to our small team after @timnitGebru and @mmitchell_ai firing will be remembered.

I previously deactivated my account to focus on work, but it needs to be said that the firing of my manager @mmitchell_ai right after @timnitGebru, without consulting Samy Bengio, is beyond concerning. To the best of my knowledge Meg was smeared on the @BusinessInsider article.

No reasonable president would gather the CEOs of pharmaceutical companies and tell them "I hope you'll educate us as to what you think is most needed to protect society". They would first ask scientists who understand the risk-benefit balance and deal with CEOs for who they are.

pas une simple allocation: un salaire de fonctionnaire de +1500€ qui fait qu'en sortie d'études, un ENS+ENA a déjà des années de cotisation retraite à son compteur, juste pour avoir étudié. Jadis, un mécanisme de promotion sociale, auj. un renforcement des inégalités de classe.

Train it on the *WHOLE* American population with: 1) an L2 loss (average error), and almost everyone will look white. 2) an L1 loss (median error), and more people might look black. stop pretending that bias does not also come from algorithmic choices.

ex: optimising the mean or the median on a population yields radically different outcomes. sociologists knew that for ages. a choice that looks as innocent as L1(median) or L2(mean) loss can be very political/biased. @profelisacelis, @timnitGebru & @AnimaAnandkumar have a point

This show reminds me is how incompetent some executives are. Back at google I said executives suffer from the "Marie Antoinette" syndrome, a term I used to describe how out of touch they are with users of google products. In fact, they are out of touch with the technology itself

Je tiens à dire que je n'ai accepté cet entretien que parce que tous les médecins basés au Maroc à qui j'ai demandé de s'exprimer ont refusé par peur. Certains m'ont par ex. rapporté un cas d'inspection du ministère suite à un post FB sur l'HCQ. Merci @Medias24 d'ouvrir le débat.

A student asked the difference between the AI Ethics & the AI Alignment communities after noting that I work on both topics. Not wanting to embark on counter-productively long debates, I replied that so far, only one of these communities gets fired when correctly doing its job.
