    For a presentation on AI, my student brought in two passages of text: one from my book (surprise!) and an AI rewrite. She asked the class which passage was better at illustrating the emotional texture of the scene. The majority chose the AI rewrite. It all felt gross.

    Let me add that these are college students in a creative nonfiction class. They are intelligent and well read. I'm not here to criticize my students. Also, AI couldn't have written squat without first ingesting my words and my experience.
